I don't have a problem with long songs-a lot of black metal drags on and that makes up 90% of my tastes
yeah i should have just looked at your ratings, looks like you're an agalloch fan (me too) so you must be cool with long songs.

Still not as powerful as Human

Crystal Mountain and Perennial Quest feel out of place for me. First two or three tracks are among the best in their discography though.

but perennial quest is the best song ever...

The self titled trakc is one fo my favorite tracks

I don't listen to a whole lot of death metal. I mean, i've HEARD a lot of it but I'm more into black metal to be honest. I can identify more with the feelings of isolation than half the lyrics on here, and I feel that it works better with a really horrifying atmosphere like Darkthrone's early stuff

Yeah the title track is incredible, I will agree with you on that, the palm-muted riff is one of the best the band ever wrote.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the title track? It seems like an extremely weak, bland opener to me

It's quite long and repetitive (each riff used twice, there was no need to drag the song on double the length it had to be) but the riffs are great, the lyrics are cool and the soloing is the best on the album.

I think that's my biggest problem with Death in general, and one I don't feel people mention enough... as much as I like the band, the refrain thing after the solo on every song of theirs does piss me off, especially when they're such an innovative metal band

They just repeat themselves too much in their songs. Their first two works were very straightforward and didn't do that as much but their last two are just TOO long and drawn out. Don't get me wrong i love them and they have some of my favorite songs on but they are just way too long. I love the blackened style of vocals on the sound of perseverance though, I thought that really suited the balls-out take no shit attitude that album had. This might be my least favorite of the final four to be honest but It's still a great album.

there's a difference between being just repetitive enough to the end of maintaining a certain structure, and being too repetitive to the point of detriment. personally I think this album kicks enough ass all around to forgive even a noticeable abuse of repetition, but I still don't see even that on here anywhere.

Yeah I see what you mean evilford which is the point i was making-it is still coherent which is why it merits a 4. The slower riffs are quite annoying at times though-the first one to the title track in particular.

they did slow it down significantly but I guess it never bothered me, kind of made it a bit more endearing to me actually I think

It's just the sort of thing that gets on my ballsac.
