I agree, DT might have higher highs with IAW, Awake and Scenes. They're sublime albums. However, DT have a lot of questionable stuff as well

LaBrie was a truly gifted singer, he was like no one else. But the band's extensive touring, 3 h sets full of very demanding songs and just bad habits wore him down quickly. His nasal timbre got more and more grating

Images is the only DT album that can match Divine-Odyssey for me; Scenes is close.

I love DT's classics like Awake, SFTM etc but honestly their only epic that could rival TDWoT, Odyssey or Through the looking glass is Change of seasons. And come on, this is prog, we're all suckers for songs that are 15+, preferably 20+ minutes.

And obviously it's not that hard deciding who has a better singer nowdays lol. There's this beautiful video on youtube called Downward Spiral of James LaBrie showing the same part of Pull Me Under across the years.
Been on DT show few months ago, recorded this exact vocal passage. Let's just say it's now about 90% worse than the last example in that video, certainly feel like I've overpaid for the tickets.
Meanwhile saw a SX playing Odyssey in full few months ago on youtube - you can see age is slowly getting to Russel but it's a different league

I feel terrible for LaBrie tbh. Dude just sang in an unstable way/had hard vocal passages from day 1 and other factors made it recipe for disaster.

You're correct. A vocal teacher on Youtuber (an actual academic, not a fraud) went made a 40 minute video on him coming to the same conclusion. It really didn't help but he was already heading down that path.
