@Irving No disrespect taken man. I'm pretty self-critical, so I understand completely where you're

coming from. I'm happy that I'm getting comments that are actual feedback on my review, regardless of

if they're positive or negative.

I love how 4 pos's on my Sigur Rós review, and 5 pos's on this review don't bring my approval rating

up from 89%, but one neg on this review brings it back down to 88% lol. That makes total sense.

I disagree. If you're trying to convince people of your position on an album and those people have heard the album then you could use songs to back it up. But a review should really be geared towards those that haven't heard the album already, in which case, specific song examples are nothing more than faceless

(soundless) titles to the reader.

Well, that's what descriptions are for right? Obviously the songs are faceless/soundless - that's the whole point of the review to begin with. There's lots that can be said about an album that's independent of how it feels as a whole (e.g how the instrumentation sounds, how the arrangements are placed, and how both of those influence how Album X fits into a band's discography). All of these "larger picture" issues may be important for one to decide whether Album X is a good album or otherwise. Now, I'm not saying every single album has to have individual song descriptions (hell, I've made dozens of reviews that don't say squat about any individual song), but I guess what I'm trying to say is that when every other sentence in this particular review begins with "Fiona is...", that just tells me the reviewer is horrendously starved of supply when it comes to things to say, and a few individual song descriptions might help fix that.

You're trying to squeeze him into your standards and guidelines of how a review should work. This is the kind of review that any long-time Fiona fan would probably be happy to read. It fits this album into the overarching context of her entire career, and even though there aren't enough specifics about the album (for you)

the tone of the write-up makes up for it by leaving no doubt that the album is worth picking up.

The same way that writing a single line (e.g "This is good, get it quick!") leaves no doubt that the album is worth picking up, right? ;) And that's my beef, really. With this review, the tonality is there, the fervent desire to trumpet The Idler Wheel as a good product is there. It's just that the absolute lack of any actual concrete examples to defend said viewpoint makes for a pretty deflating reading experience overall. If a long-time Fiona fan were to read this, I doubt that they'd learn anything, really, since it's all generalized assertions that aren't really here or there. My two cents.

And breakingthefragile, dude, hope you don't mind my being so harsh and vocal with regards to this review. I honestly mean well by it and sincerely feel you have the potential to do well. It's just that I feel that your writing style would have benefited massively had the arguments you were trying to make here been more concrete.

I think you're being anal and demanding ;) There are a lot of things that could theoretically be said of individual songs, but why not let the listener discover them on their own instead of anticipating them based on a review? As long as they know, overall, that the album is worth listening to. In my opinion, a really good album review would be like a really good movie review -- no spoilers. Just a broad explanation of what works and what doesn't.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that when every other sentence in this particular review begins with "Fiona is...", that just tells me the reviewer is horrendously starved of supply when it comes to things to say, and a few individual song descriptions might help fix that.
I think you're looking for a direction that the reviewer never even intended to take. This seems more like an overarching write-up that culminates with how everything comes together on this album. Yes, he's speaking about her and non-album subjects from time to time but it all makes sense for how he wanted to go about presenting this album. I think you're just hung up on "Fiona is..."

The same way that writing a single line (e.g "This is good, get it quick!") leaves no doubt that the album is worth picking up, right?
Except it doesn't. Thanks!

Do you look at abstract art and get pissed off that you don't recognize the subject through all the random shapes and colors? I think you do ;)

For clarification purposes, whenever I say something that Fiona does, I meant to say it as in that's what she does on this album, and what she does on this album is what she consistently does generally throughout her discography. I can see how like Willie mentioned when I was saying "Fiona is" it can be easy to get the impression I'm just talking about Fiona in general. I should of instead worded it to imply more clearly that I'm talking about this album. I say, Fiona does this, and Fiona is that, when I should of said this album does this and that. Bad wording on my part.

Never really listened to her before, but I'm quite enjoying this record. "Left Alone" and "Periphery" in particular are good tracks.

the two before this are fantastic records, you aught to give those a listen. tidal was written when she was like 14-18 and is a good piece of work in its own right but the other two are pretty essential imo
