when you refer to the band name, you refer to the members collectively so you say "are"
when you refer to the band itself (ex. the band is planning to tour soon) as opposed to saying Love
American are planning to tour soon, you refer to a singular entity so you say "is"
You could say that 'the band are planning to tour soon', but 'is' works fine in this regard. Plenty of bands refer to themselves in this way, at least on occasion. It's just when you start referring to the band as 'it' that it sounds weird, as if they've power rangered into some strange mega-human.

A far more accurate comparison is a sports team. The abstract concept of the team can be an 'it' -
because the shared goal of wearing the same clothes and playing together is only an idea, not a
tangible, living thing - but the actions carried out by the team will always take the form of 'they
played well, they lost, they won' rather than 'it won, it lost, it went out for a few beers
afterwards'.
