Man this is weird, I have literally no idea whether it's good or not.

Some of the instrumentation is cool & her voice CAN be enjoyable, also there's a lot of variation in both aspects which keeps things interesting. I do find her voice a tad over-bearing at times though, especially the higher pitched moments (which are often), this isn't always a problem for me (I even like Melt-Banana's vox, who someone once described as 'the Powerpuff Girls on meth').

It jumps quite abruptly from being enjoyable to grating & I like the stylistic changes at times, but why is there a song that sounds like generic pop punk (instrumentally)? In fact the pop rocky stuff is also generally a bit cheesy.

I do really like the orchestral & jazzy elements though.

Very confused.

Because the power chord laden style of that genre blends with the noisy brickwalled production to create an abrasive yet simple backdrop so the vocal melodies are front and centre.

The composition of something being done thousands of times before doesn't matter, it's the concept and presentation of it (Posting here on phone is awful).

Sounds like you're over thinking it a bit dude, haha! It's basically a pop album covered up with a load of fun, noisy rock arrangements and some orchestral twists; take it easy and see if you feel it

This. And it's all about riding them sweet sweet melodies

Depends, the composition certainly can matter although I won't dispute your general point, not everything has to be completely original in that regard & I couldn't realistically expect that to be the case. It just wasn't for me.

I'm not panning this, like I said there are definitely some interesting ideas here but it doesn't appear to be the easiest listen from start to finish, feel like I'm abruptly being sucked in & then pulled away again by the very next track.

It's fun sometimes so...

I like 'disco metal' & if you're completely against fun that just isn't possible, haha

Have you tried Kalk Samen? The writing and arrangement on that album are probably way more up your street

Is this anything like the album before this, because if so I agree with Demon

@Demon: Yeah it isn't the easiest listen since it's so loud and every song throws you into a very different mood so whether you like that or not depends on how much you like each individual song. Despite that, I feel like the album is structured correctly with its order, especially with Tsumi being the grand center piece and picking the song with jammy outro as the closer.

"Man this is weird, I have literally no idea whether it's good or not."

Most of the time, that means it's good. But yeah, check out Kuri no Hana, but DON'T expect it to be the "easiest listen" either. It's much farther "out there". Thinking about it, Sanmon Gossip might be your go-to Shiina for now. It's very well-crafted and distinct in its sound.

No it isn't.

Admittedly there's some catchy stuff on here, 'Bathroom' & 'Identity' certainly are.
