Yes, it's definitely more accomplished, especially the epics and some of the ballads, which are huge improvements over this album. I'll admit I haven't jammed the second one many times, but it appeared to me as if there was a lack of the progression of their identity I was hoping for, yet a progression of the cheesiness.
I remember a few of the songs being blatant cheese fests, but I might need to refresh my memory

Damn right, Omair, and yes, Steve is an accomplished guitarist and composer.
If you haven't, check their second album Second Nature. More accessible but with more depht. The three albums feature all the same lineup. I'm not that familiar with their third one, but I think it's their worse.

Blue Ocean and Infinite Fire still hold up as great prog rock tracks imo. Also always felt like The Storm was a great radio song, even if most people here don't like it. It's technically subdued yes but the arrangement just has the perfect amount of complexity has to not become mindless pop drivel. That solo is also incredible.

I also always liked this album. It's true that technically isn't a complex album or very prog but anyway I like it. It's an enjoyable proposal to listen to.
