I agree dude. The lack of energy really made the repetitive song structures boring instead of hypnotizing, a pitfall that more than a few black metal artists fall into.

Well, I guess it depends on your interpretation. The way I see it, the riffs accompanying the blasts seem bleak, dull, and uninspired. With the lack of emotion, the repetitive nature fails to achieve even close to the same kind of hypnotic atmosphere that you'd get from listening to, say Paysage d'Hiver.

It feels like the chord progressions should be going faster, but they're just not. If everything would've been sped up a little bit it would've seemed a lot more animated and energetic.

Yeah we’ll see. I use to be blown away by everything in the genre when I was getting my toes wet and now I’ve become quite picky lol. Could go either way, but my love for the opening track will likely never change... that build up is perfect
