Most music might suck, but I feel like bad music is pretty easy to avoid

"Most music might suck, but I feel like bad music is pretty easy to avoid"
It is, but I wasn't trying to avoid it. In fact, I was looking for it. I'm trying to not do that too often now, but I was used to it so it is a bit hard to resist the temptation of listening to something that looks pretty bad.

"Aaaaaand that’s why no one respects your opinion. So clearly negatively biased."

I know people who are more voraciously into film than I could ever imagine who think (at least?) 90% of what they see is mediocre, that film craft tends toward mediocrity. it's interesting. or I guess that's true of music too but I'm thinking of a guy in particular that I really respect and it's sort of crazy to think he's putting himself through that but I guess there's also a sense in which you're magnetized by The Magic of the Silver Screen no matter what your ultimate count is. or the equivalent pull of musical form. who's to say. hey guys
edit: Dan Sallitt on the matter, regarding film: "In practice, the auteurist often has a split personality. Part of that personality simply loves watching moving images in a dark room, gets low-level indiscriminate pleasure from industrial film forms; another part judges more harshly and constructs aesthetic criteria that exclude some of the pleasure that he or she is capable of receiving."

Me too, I keep postponing it.

I used to watch films the same way I listen to music, I say I used to because I barely watch any new films now so I try to stick to something I think I'll like; and yeah, most films are also pretty fucking bad, but there's a point when you just enjoy watching a film or listening to music on itself, so watching/listening to something bad isn't really problem.

First time I've heard about Dan Sallitt. He seems cool.

Dan Sallitt is an absolute genius albeit you'll have to get used to the a) stringent "auteurism" and b) the old hollywood worship but he's the best film writer ever in my opinion. his blogs, notes he posts on twitter, official articles: all worthwhile. his movies are pretty good as well

Auteurism is nice.
