Review Summary: A romp in the church hall
This band gets an awful lot of hate because back when they were starting out they made a music video featuring them squatting in this odd position while playing and they tried to call their genre crabcore. Coming out of the gates a facetious mess Attack Attack! Had their work frowned down on from nearly all corners. If they didn’t have such a sloppy start who knows where this quirky band could have went.
Austin is a really good screamer he shrieks in a really high pitch fry screams that blend greatly with the music and have a lot of energy. He may get the most attention from the scene kids but he is most certainly not the only highlight of the show. At the time this review is being written in 2012 there exists hundreds of copycats and bands under this style thanks to the sellout ethic of labels such as Rise Records. That being said though they all were influenced by Attack Attack! A band many met with disgust. Some however were able to look past the image and see there were some interesting ideas going on here.
Their music is fun and not to be taken seriously and that is exactly what the band shows in their music video. Their lyrics generally involve preachy Christian nonsense which is really ridiculous because it doesn’t suit the album at all! They would have been much better off to make a full blown party soundtrack then maybe people could take them for what they were.
The guitars etc. are pretty generic albeit rather upbeat. This album isn’t depressing, it isn’t deep but boy oh boy is it a real hoot! Even the interlude dance track is a lot of fun showing that even an interlude with this band can be barrels of monkey fun. This album never grows boring it stays consistently upbeat throughout without even needing to experiment due to the winning formula. This album does stand out though because of their blend between synth and metalcore. Instead of resorting to generic jugging they stray away from that but fall flat by playing it safe with simple harmonized riffs. The beauty though is that these riffs blend fantastically with the techno beats and the superb vocals delivered by Austin to conclude an upbeat album lacking in surprise but offer chaotic grin inducing moments.
Pros:
+ lots of fun
+ cool dance section parts
+Amazing vocals
+Doesn’t resort to chugging as most band
+ Influential
Cons:
-Generic instrumentation
-Poor lyrics
-Lack of variety
-Bad Image for band
