Spiteful/Dour/Murder are instant Barnes classics, but 13 minutes of noise, almost 25% of the album, keep this from being a 5. I can just skip the one that’s a whole track of noise, but the six minute transition in that last one really take away from an otherwise great song, imo. A one minute transition woulda been about perfect. Then again I’m just some asshole and Kevin Barnes can keep doing whatever he wants.

The noise bits are my favorite on the album, but he was well aware that pretty much no one would like them. He's just creating for himself at this point and I love that!

It seems that Kevin no longer plays any songs on this album live other than Wolf Murder, most likely due to K Ishibashi quitting the band to pursue his own career. Sad At least I got to see all of my favorite songs from it sans Plaintiff.

Good news is he has 3 songs done for a new album and a shit-ton of lyrics. I bet it's out Spring next year. :x

i literally hadn't heard any of montreal before and just went hissing fauna, satanic panic, gay parade, and then this. I have to say this record is really intriguing and entertaining musically, kind of like the maximalism of anco, the super all-over the place vocals of elo, and the paranoid atmospheric bent of kid a to present radiohead. a 3.5 is probably what i'll end up going for too

I actually agree with this so much.

I'm actually digging the rough edges too- i'm a huge fan of liars and the inaccessible madness/simple pop section alternations in the second half remind me hugely of drum's not dead, not in style, but balance. just fantastic

Saw them live again on 12/12/12...great show, even though not one song was played from Paralytic
Stalks, and only three from Daughter of Cloud.
Finally got to meet Kevin
