Oh God is it like the Age of Adz. This will be your jam, Lakes.

I don't think they're terribly similar, but similarities can certainly be drawn. They're both incredibly ambitious projects, but this album is definitely more disjointed than Adz. Adz is also much more electronic, whereas this has heavy glam influence throughout. Sounds more like Halloween Jack trying to create an album that rivals that of Stevens, despite not being sonic neighbors.

I can agree with that pretty thoroughly, actually

The biggest issue I see with this review and the accompanying opinion about Exorcismic Breeding Knife is the glaring fact that the album as a whole and thus, the true intention of the artist, is being lost on the reviewer, completely. Kevin Barnes writes albums as complete pieces of music. Every individual song is a part that completes the whole but no single movement in and of itself should be taken as its own separate entity that should be dissected in a place wholly isolated from the group. When you say things like, Exorcismic Breeding Knife is a bad song or that Kevin Barnes has missed the mark with this one, I think it reveals an endemic misunderstanding of what the artist is trying to communicate with the entire album. It seems that as much as certain people would profess to be fans of indie or against popular music they still fall victim to the trappings of the popular music industry. In this mindset, if a three minute piece of music is immediately catchy and instantly gratifying then it is okay. Barnes has stated in multiple interviews that he is not interested in producing this kind of indie music; Music that has no desire to advance the art form and that stays slavishly chained to popular convention is not within his domain of practice. To judge Barnes’ output on a stage of popular convention and then decide that he has fallen short of this convention is like judging a Picasso painting in a realist art show… it’s just silly. I think the real damage that can be done from these types of ill conceived opinions is that fact that Kevin Barnes gets slated as an artist that has highs and lows; his output shows glimpses of genius but his over exuberance causes him to fall short of whatever musical vision might be stirring in the dark recesses of an otherwise enlightened brain. This view is just flat out wrong. Barnes doesn’t write a piece like Dour Percentage and then all of the sudden lose all musical focus and ability while putting together Exorcismic Breeding Knife. That’s just a foolish assumption to make because someone that talented does not short change himself with what he intends to release for world consumption. You may not like the song and that’s okay, but to suggest that Barnes has somehow erred or not fulfilled some faulty construct of an ideal form of music composition is utterly ridiculous. His song writing track record, even from just a musical composition standpoint, speaks for itself. He does not miss the mark. He gives us the fully illuminated manifestation of that radiating spark of genius that resides in his head; one that we can only use as a guidepost for our own artistic enjoyment and one that we dim by claiming to understand his production in a better light than Barnes himself does.

Cokelley, once you stop pulling relatively large words out of your ass to try and sound intelligent, I'll listen to what you have to say.

On second thought, I definitely won't

I think that what he says has some merit. He's more upset with your word choice than you disliking the song. This band is certainly one of the most consistent bands I've ever heard. Yes, I'm including Skeletal Lamping in that statement.

@anthracks Yes! and I wasn't pulling big words out of my ass, just using the standard english language to express my point of view. Word!

And in my humble opinion, this album is one of the most wildly inconsistent albums I've heard in my
life. It's true, not because it's 2deep4me, but because it just is. Write your own review if you
want.

And Standard English language? lolok

"an endemic misunderstanding"

"Music that has no desire to advance the art form and that stays slavishly chained to popular
convention is not within his domain of practice"

"to suggest that Barnes has somehow erred or not fulfilled some faulty construct of an ideal form of
music composition is utterly ridiculous."

"his output shows glimpses of genius but his over exuberance causes him to fall short of whatever
musical vision might be stirring in the dark recesses of an otherwise enlightened brain"

The fact remains that you a) never would speak this way in real life, or b) do, and because of it,
come across as obscenely pretentious, and also c) the fact that you said absolutely nothing by
spouting so much nonsense

I thought he used language well. I know ostentatious writing and that wasn't it.

I think that all of the songs on this album (and every other of Montreal album I've listened to thus far) are of the same exact quality and in-line with the quality I expect from the artist; I believe I've conveyed that enough, though. I don't see how you can pick and "choose" parts that you are fond of when they are all obviously emanating from the same place, but I'm not sure if it's a matter of "getting it" or not (I would never presume such a thing). As long as Barnes and co. continue to write music in whatever fashion they have been doing so for the last ~15 years, I will continue to eat it up because the central component of all their music just resonates perfectly with me.

I absolutely disagree with your opinion on "Exorcismic Breeding Knife". Think of the brilliant pieces that are comparable, such as "Revolution 9", or the more modern, "Aunt Eggma Blowtorch". They create an intense atmosphere of evoking senses, perhaps even ones of paranoia, which is what was conjured in my mood after listening to the track. You claim the track makes you feel "uncomfortable" and "unpleasant", but I believe that is exactly what Barnes was aiming for with the track, so really, it accomplished it's goal. Nonetheless, it is a good review that you wrote, so I give you props.

On the contrary, this is the very first time I've ever had the pleasure to even listen to this band,

so "fanboy"... I would say that would be going rather over board. I do plan on expanding on my

listening endeavors with this band, however. I suppose ignorance is bliss, though. I was by no means

trying to insult you in the first place OmahaStyle, just trying to share my insight on the track.

And yes klap4music, Revolution 9 is one of my favorite pieces of "music" (if you want to consider it

that). Drop a few hits of acid and watch as Revolution 9 consumes your mind and you dive into a state

of consciousness far beyond what you could possibly comprehend in a regular state of mind.

This was my first of Montreal album as well. It's funny since that one review (I forget the publication) mentioned that this album would not garner the band any new fans, but I know quite a few including myself. of Montreal "fanboys," from what I see, definitely reject a good portion of the band's material.

Also, I just read Pitchfork's review for this (and some of their other reviews), and is it just me or do their reviews sound more like personal diary entries rather than critiques of music? Half of the time they aren't even mentioning the music at all, and I can rarely tell what genre they are even talking about.
