Review Summary: it has sparks of potential to be a great album but the flame flickers out before the cd gets a chance to finish So some people thing this album is really good, and I'm here to tell you why it most certainly is not! After the success of there past two albums, Brand New decided to focus on a darker sound for the relapse. And sure, it's got a few good tracks. I mean come on who doesn't get excited when they here the chorus of Sowing Season (Yeah) thumping through there speakers? In fact, the first two tracks are grate in their intensity and impact. However Track 3 (Jesus Christ) is where it all takes a turn for the worst. This is where the band gets way too preachy for my taste, trying to cram Jesus Christ down our throats. Ok dude, we get it, you're super religious, but what about the people that aren't? Do they not get a say? Jesse Lacey (more like Jesus Lacey..I apologize for that bad joke) continues to talk about heaven and God (even referenced in the title!) and it all seems really forced like he doesn't even buy what he's selling.
However vocally the album is grate, its got that perfect mixture of screams and melodies and actually a rather feint tinge of that classic Gothenberg sound albeit packaged up nice in a indie post-hardcore bow. The guitars are always doing something different and the musicality is off the charts, but i can't overlook the singer's lyrical style. i mean i liked Deja Entendu as much as the next guy but is Jesse Lacey really serious here? I don't feel like being depressed for almost an hour; the only time the album ever lightnings up is during Not the Sun and Archers (or on some printings I think it's called The Archers Bows Have Broken). The rest is all doom, gloom, despair, agony, and death. I guess it works because of Jesse's tortured screams.
The worst song has to be Luca, but it doesn't start off that way. It actually starts off with a nice acoustic melody for about six minutes, before it quites all the way down...and then SCARES THE FREAKIN CRAP OUT OF YOU! I can't tell you how many times I've woken up with my heart pounding at the "Where you been???" part of the song. It gets on my nerves to no end, and that's about the best I can do to sum up this album: annoying. It hits you with a non relenting wave of depression and never lets up. Daisy is even worse, but we'll get to that. I hear that brand new are trying to write some "happy' music, and by God they certainly need it. Give our ears a rest, Jesse.

Honestly this is terrible. Even if I didn't like this album this review is just awful.
Downrating an album for being too "depressing"? Also degrading "Jesus" to evangelical ramblings makes me not take this seriously at all.

The album is about his journey and life which happens to incorporate his religious beliefs, but the point of the album isn't "to cram Jesus down your throat".
Album is far superior than a 2.
