This just popped into my mind, but I hate how streaming services have a version of Kalk Samen that doesnt match the CD release. In the CD release, all the tracks blend into eachother at the begining and end of the songs a lot of the time, which is why songs like Ishiki have really long intros on the spotify version. Always annoyed me, cause the album is so meticulously made to have symmetry, including its original 44:44 length, which has also been lost in the spotify release. Totally ruins the albums flow.

This album and shoso are perfect. Damn shame shes so obsessed with the jazz pop stuff these days, i dig a lot of it but she peaked with that jazz stuff on heisei and its all just been kinda downhill since. The rougher less polished aspects of her first 3 albums are what make them so endearing to me, her new stuff is just way too sanitized and feels coordinated to appeal to the widest possible audience. Meanwhile 2003 shiina dodnt give a fuck, like i cannot se her releasing a track like doppelganger these days

The reality is Shiina is a much older woman now, with a family. Those days for her are over.

Wow I never realized this. I just listened to a version on Youtube with the original flow and it's a different experience altogether

@samswise2000: Nailed it on the head, however, Tokyo Jihen's latest album was fantastic so we can't take that away from her.

Keep in mind the vinyl version of KSK also doesn't match the CD version, just in case you ever came across that one as well. There's a track that's different. I think it's an English version of STEM?

I believe the vinyl version has the single version of stem. That single also has alternate versions of Ishiki and Meisai

I personally dont really subscribe to the idea that artists cant produce great art at an old age. Shiina has just made noticeable divergance from her indie rock inspired years into a very conventioanl, overblown jazz pop craze which i think has dampered her creativity because her new sound is very restrictive and, lets face it, kind of bland. Her new stuff feels like shes just coasting. Even her old B-sides and the covers album from 2000 are more creative than Sandokushi and Sunny ever were

I'm not saying she can't make great music anymore. I'm saying she's not going to make the same music anymore because she's older. That's all. Calc mentioned the new TJ is a great album, and I agree. I recommend checking it out.

the worst part was that Sandokushi was erratically creative in a whole bunch of ways, it was also just very hecking bad

her new solo albums dont feel like albums made with intention of being albums, almost like compilations. Like, how do you fuck up a song with Atsushi Sakurai? Cause shiina sure did LMAO

also yes the new tokyo jihen was a fun listen! Still think they peaked with their debut and adult tho lol why do i have to be such a jaded music listener, i lament the days when i used to love everything i listened to even if it was shit

That song with Sakurai is hilariously bad, and their live performance of it together is adorkable. I personally liked Tokyo Jihen's latest more than Adult or their debut, making it my fav album of theirs. It's their most lush album by far.

However, she decided to change the title at the last minute after being intrigued by an argument she overheard between two male staff members on her team, who bickered over whether the smell of semen more resembled the smell of chlorine or the smell of the chestnut flowers. She thought that the nuance of the word "semen" was beautiful, and adapted it to the original title, explaining that "Kalk" fit into the original first word of "Wonder", while "Semen" fit "Vulgar"
