Their 1998-2005 albums are definitely better, more cohesive and complex. This is still great though, but it's meandering and unfocused sometimes

This is right after MAYH and GR.

The funny thing is that I used to stand on the mid-era Opeth side of the fence, but now I find myself preferring their first 3 albums.

Ofc, that kinda stuff can happen when you revisit albums.

Yeah, can't really go wrong with 'Peth's discog, it's not like they have a St. Anger, Jugulator, Super Collider, etc.

Although I need to jam Damnation and Deliverance again myself, I've only heard 'em once, but don't recall either of 'em being that bad.

Deliverance is easily their worst imo.

This may not flow as seamlessly as some of their later (post-MAYH) albums but it's sure as hell more interesting.

I prefer Morningrise and MAYH to this but this is a close 3rd.

Interesting, I never limit myself to certain genres. I'll just cycle through albums on impulse. Occasionally though a certain

genre may stay in the rotation for a period of time.

Two good genre choices to avoid.

When this came out, how unique was it? Were there other bands doing the same thing or was this a surprise?

When Opeth first started in the 90's their producer Dan Swano fronted a band called Edge of Sanity and alongside Opeth are considered the first bands to merge extreme metal with prog rock. Edge of Sanity technically came first, but Opeth pretty much get all the credit.

Death was also experimenting with prog by this time, so in a sense they were doing something similar to what Opeth was doing.

Not really. Death didnt have any folk/blues influences or acoustic passages with clean vocals. And
yeah this was really unique when it came out even though EoS were doing the same thing. Opeth took it
much further
