Knots is a wonderful example of Klangfarbenmelodie in rock music.

Yes, it works wonderfully well. It's something they make use of fairly often in general though, especially compared to other artists. One of the things I love most about their music. Makes it feel all over the place and yet dense and coherent.

Yet at the same time they manage to come of as more humble and less pompous than say, yes or genesis. Puzzle me how they managed that. I cry for Everyone is prettier than anything genesis did.

Eh I'm a Genesis fan so I'll obviously disagree, plus I don't really see the connection between that song and Genesis, but it definitely is a beautiful song. Sounds more like a much stronger version of the softer Haken songs to me

"Eh I'm a Genesis fan so I'll obviously disagree" So am I.. I never meant that it was musically similar. Just that Gentle Giant are more "pastoral" than Genesis.

Oh nevermind, I messed two songs up :}

Probably, yes. Gentle Giant are totally unlike any other prog band though so I never really drew the comparison by myself. However, one thing that occurs to me every now and then is how much more they are able to organize the chaos in their music in comparison to, say, Van der Graaf Generator who tend to be just all over the place

Gentle Giant has some surprisingly pretty ballads. Edge of Twilight, Think of Me With Kindness, Inmate's Lullaby, Aspirations and His Last Voyage all come to mind. The keyboardist Kerry Minnear wrote those songs, and his voice fits perfectly. I think he was the most talented of the bunch.

I feel becoming a huge fan of classical music made me appreciate this more than I would've otherwise, this is one of the few progressive bands I know of that use classical instruments tastefully

This album is amazing
