I know that little song. Not bad, but strange in the Shulman's standards. It's the only song I've heard by Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. Who would have thought that Gentle Giant would emerge out of this.

yeah it is very different from most of their stuff, but I think it's a great song. It also explains some of their later fascination with oriental sounding stuff like "Playing the Game."

Yes, or ''I Lost my Head''.

Also, Wikipedia is very informative about Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. The passage when one of the Shulman says that the brothers were not satisfied with the contribution of the other musicians, and it got rather heavy when they realized they could play drums better than the drummer lol.

haha interesting. Either extreme of band members fighting for control or some being indifferent will lead to failure.

I confess that I had never heard this song. Thanks, Friday 13th. Yes this is a very beautiful song that sounds strongly to the final of the 60's. But Jethro is right. It's a very strange song to the Shulman brothers style.

In 1969, the Shulman brothers finally dissolved the group in order to escape the pop music environment that had frustrated them. Surprisingly, they did not return directly to rhythm and blues or soul, but chose to pursue a more complicated direction. Ray Shulman later stated "We knew we couldn't continue with the musicians we'd had before. We weren't interested in the other musicians in the band — they couldn't contribute anything. We had to teach them what to do. It got rather heavy when we could play drums better than the drummer, and even on record we were doing more and more of it with overdubs. It got stupid having a band like (that). The first thing was to get some musicians of a higher standard.

Try this album, thrasher. And if you dig it, try In a Glass House. Everything they did is exciting except for their last 3 albums.

Yes GG is mostly complex, adventurous but in the same time it's melodic, and they flirt with medieval. Music has frequent changes in tempo, non-standard time-signatures, multi-part vocal harmonies etc..The playing of the drummer brings a solid rock feel to their dissonant, eventful music.

Octopus is probably not a good starting point. GG is not for everyone. Give a go to In a Glass House if you haven't, and/or Free Hand. If you don't dig them, band is not for you. My personal fave is Acquiring the Taste.

Maybe you're right for ''Edge of Twilight'' and ''Moon is Down'', but ''Pentagruel's Nativity'', ''The House, the Street, the Room'', ''Wreck'', ''Black Cat'' and ''Plain Truth'' are all classic GG songs.

I remember reading that the intro to Pantegruel has a glitch and I could never figure out what it was.
