But HEY! I love Lungs, it's fun, it's endearing, it's unashamedly poppy, etc., but this just seems like a more matured and whole sound (can't stress that point enough).

Agree re: the diversity of 'Lungs', but not so much on the consistency. I really wanted to give that album a 4.5, but just couldn't because it was a little all over the place. I think Welch herself said it was a build-up of songs over about 4-5 years.

I become exhausted when I try to get through this album these days. Also Heartlines is one of the cheesiest songs of the year.

Haha I know, but factor in the leak time and it feels like it's been a while. Album is possibly too immediate, I can't find much to really dig into that will keep me coming back time and time again. Still really impressive though.

Lungs was good... but really scattered and had some terrible songs (Kiss With First being one of the worst, thank god I'm not the only one who thinks that). I guess scattered means "diverse" to some, it was kind of a mess to me, like she had no idea what direction she wanted to go in.
This album does not have that feel, at all. It's an entire album, everything makes sense and has a context. And everything is big as hell here. Probably my album of the year.
Sometimes I think people wanted her to stay as this quiet indie-pop princess but she clearly wasn't content to be what she was, she wants to be bigger and better. And I think she got way better.

I can't give a concrete answer to that, other than that it feels out of place on Lungs (not that it's a really cohesive album to begin with, but still) and just rubs me the wrong way.
