Interesting. I think they hit their pinnacle with this album; they had some really good stuff from Californication afterwards, but they seemed to be at their peak here for me.

And also, Ifghtffyrdmns I'll edit that when I get a chance :] thank you!

"Breaking the Girl," "Suck My Kiss," "Give It Away," " Under the Bridge"...the amount of mega-hit definitive rock songs on this is ridiculous. This would be a classic even if the other tracks were filler. Luckily, we got gems like "I Could Have Lied" and "The Righteous and the Wicked" instead. Amazing album. Great review.

The strength of the songs on this album completely blow their other albums out of the water. I can't believe some people prefer Californication to this. Almost every damn song on this album is awesome.

Also, the production on this album is excellent. This is their best sounding album.

Definitley in my top 5 albums ever. I could ramble on about this record for ages. It also turned out to be their last album that SOUNDED good. As much as I love everything these guy's have made (they are my favourite band I guess) Californication onwards had so much digital clipping it was just sad.

This album is also a huge influence on my guitar playing and what I bring to my own band.

I agree with those of you that mentioned the lack of filler on the album. Even the less impressive songs on this album are still great, and would be highlights on other albums easily. I agree with you WhiteNoise, the production now is so stale... I mean, Anthony's voice in particular is just so over-produced... Their later music sounds like it's lost its soul.

And thanks for the feedback!

Thanks man! And yeah same here; I actually bought about all of their albums within a year of middle school, hah. Californication was the first album I ever listened to extensively :3 what a great introduction to music.

Californication definitely helped broaden my horizons as well when it came out. The only bands I liked as a kid were Green Day, Blink 182, R.E.M., and the Beach Boys, most of those from listening to stuff my dad would play for me in the mid-90s as it came out. By the time Californication came out I was either nine or ten years old and I'd say right around the time that album dropped I discovered Nirvana alongside Californication and the RHCP back catalog (mainly this album here). Definitely piqued my childhood interest in the whole alternative rock boom of the 90s and the bands like RHCP that rode that diverse wave. Lots of good nostalgia linked to that record, same with this one too.

xfearbefore I know what you mean completely. I have a ton of nostalgia with about any Chili Peppers album from awhile back. However, the beautiful thing about this album is that even though I've known it for a long time, I still view it as a masterpiece. Songs like Mellowship Slinky, Apache Rose, and Sir Psycho Sexy make me realize how lucky I got to have this as one of the first albums to ever grace my ears...

And jayfatha, is it just me or does that album have a good amount of filler?

The outro to "Sir Psycho Sexy" is fucking indescribable. It makes me feel euphoric, yet somehow depressed at the same time. The chorus progression is seriously something out of this world, love how it gradually escalates and builds
