IfYouRun, your review is WAY too biased. You obviously aren't a fan of screaming, or at the very least not THEIR screaming, so you're reviewing it based on your personal genre tastes, rather than musical talent. "The screamer has very little to do for most of this and thankfully it’s hard to see things changing in the future." Really? Because Alesana was started as a heavy band, if you want to listen to melodic singing without screaming, rather than expect this out of Alesana, perhaps look to another band? A band totally abandoning its roots, as musically complex and instrumentally superior as they may become, is NEVER a positive thing. Alesana was started as a heavy band, and the further away from that they become, the less interest I will have in listening to their albums. As lame as the ending to "And They Call This Tragedy" was, it's still a better track than almost any song on this album.

I know that was a pretty long rant, but nothing pisses me off more than seeing someone who obviously knows nothing about the band (Baltimore? They're from North Carolina, kid) try to review their music, especially when they're so obviously biased in their review.

Oh, and IfYouRun, FFAF is a horrible band to cite to make your tastes seem better, because they as well started out as a very promising band, and turned to shit in their later albums. Hours was the last decent one, and only because The End of Nothing is the best song they've ever produced. Even in the beginning, they were never very "heavy", so that's a pretty shitty comparison to say that Alesana doesn't do heavy well. Heavy is EXACTLY what Alesana does best.

Dude, I love Alesana. It's not supposed to be like every other generic post-hardcore band out there. They have their own style, I like it and some don't.

This is Sputnik, and this album is post-hardcore: therefore it will instantly get 1's from people who have never heard it.

Album Rating: 3.0 | Sound Off

i personally disagree totally and completely. i LOVED their first three albums. i thought they were amazing. the way that Dennis' screams and Shawn's melodic voice blended just sounded beautiful, and i loved the duets between Melissa and Shawn on the "On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax" album, and how she was in the emptiness. their stories are amazing, and i love the themed songs that go along with the stories....i started listening to them two years ago, and since then decided they were amazing. i saw them in concert, which was great, they sounded just as good as on the CD and they're amazing guys. so when i heard that their new album was set to be released, i pre-ordered it because i was so excited. i waited for three weeks for it to get here, and when it finally did, i ripped the package open and threw it in the CD player, and almost started crying. i hated it. this new album PUTS ME TO SLEEP. i love alesana and their lyrics, and i thought that basing the new album on Dante's Inferno was genius because i love the book so much. i enjoy the first song, but i felt that the italian without any translation went on a little too long...the second song started out amazing, with the usual alesana, dennis screams. until the brass music which to me sounded like elevator music. hand in hand with the damned is probably my least favorite song on there. overall, i just thought that the album needed more of the old alesana, which quite frankly, is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. i will always be a fan, but i'm just disappointed at how boring this one was :/

I'll probably have a review for this up sometime next week, but I probably don't want to waste my time listening to this.

Empyrean, a review IS an opinion piece, therefor saying its based on my opinion is obvious. Also, i didn't state in the review but i actually really enjoy their first album at points. It's not that i hate them being heavy, i love heavy music, i just don't like Alesana's version of heavy. However imo, their last two were very average. But thanks for the input, even if we don't agree.

Oh and by the way, Funeral's new album is spectacular, if you haven't heard.

alesanaloveandysix, i would respond but you have the band title IN your name, next to the lead singer of one of the worst bands out there. I'd never convince you so...

Not trying to hate on the author but you're article is terrible. I respect your view on Alesana but the way you wrote that it seems like you want to write reviews for AP which all of them are terrible as well. I thought the album was amazing in my opinion and if you had given the respect to the band to say where they actually are from then maybe I'd respect your article.

So what you're saying is, music is subjective, but he's wrong because you disagree.

Good review, but I've never been a fan of Alesana and this album doesn't change anything for me.

Awesome front cover though.

Firstly, Kudos to the writer of this for not completely bashing them like other reviews.

Secondly, I've been deeply into every genre of music, for nearly 20 years it's been my life. I'm 28 years old and out of everything I've listened to this album really stood out to me.

The catchy melodies are perfect, the storyline is epic, and the heavy parts come in at perfect timing. I loved the entire album and listened to it twice in a row.

People who hate on this kind of music are those that are close minded and don't give it a chance. You don't give yourself a chance to enjoy it. I just wish some people were more open minded, and realize that all music is beautiful.

Good review, thanks for not hating on a good band too much.
