"half of vader's discog, at least half of deicide's, etc etc"
I can see that, Vader really fails to grab my attention, the only album i legit like is De Profundis, the rest i've listened to kinda bores me. I prefer Deicide any day even with the stinkers for some reason

my hot take is that vader's best stuff is their 80s demos lol
re: domination i think the highs are high (dawn of the angry was my fav ma tune for a long time and its still very much up there) but theres also some awkward and pointless moments

I think Covenant's always gonna be my favorite by these guys. I love how it hits that sweet spot where it combines the pure speed and aggression of Altars with the slower, doomier riffs and dark atmosphere of Blessed. Perfect mixture

"i guess it depends what you like about gojira specifically, but a lot of their riffs on terra and on from mars remind me of that album. and you get a monstrous performance from pete behind the drums"
Formulas definitely gave me the Gojira vibes here and there, so overall feels like a good sign for Annihilation
Btw, i recommend the Possessed EP from Gojira, surprisingly enjoyable dm

yeah some of their early stuff is even more morbid angel-y but closer to this old stuff than to gateways

Yeah, I've been revisiting their stuff recently and it still holds up so well. The Way of All Flesh and From Mars to Sirius are my favorites by them these days, but I still maintain that they've never made a bad album yet

"It's crazy how wide-ranging the opinions are for that one. I hear plenty of people say it's one of the classic dm albums of that time, while other people seem to regard it as a huge disappointment compared to the first three. Haven't listened to it in ages though, so I'll have to come to my own conclusion on that one"
I mean, while it's not super duper good, still slaps that's for sure, some really nasty and creative riffs there

I'm with you on that one, it goes so goddamn hard it makes lose my shit every time, one of the goat

i mean covenant is just hands down their most creative effort. you've got hyperspeed tracks like pain divine with that melodic lead main riff, old school thrashers like angel of disease, songs like sworn to the black with some of the craziest riffing theyve ever done, and then they top it all off out of left field with the sludge groove of god of emptiness and somehow it all just works.
none of their other material elicits the same wow factor as most of the tunes on covenant. which is nuts because its their only major label album, which is usually where bands falter. but they were firing on all cylinders and it rules.
