First album from the band, pretty cool so far. Nice review but I see this as a 3.5 right now. Probaly will up to a 4 but we'll see after a couple more listens.

I love this album to bits, honestly. Scenes From A Memory is better, but this... It's still out-of-this-world fantastic. I respect your opinions of course, and great job on the review, you COMPLETELY got your view across of the album, although I would have expected a 3 from the review, I can understand it. And nice job not doing what most people do with LaBrie- You did admit that he's still a very good singer, even though you don't think he should be with Dream Theater. I mean, personally he's one of my favourite vocalists of all time and I honestly can't see everyone's problem with him (honestly, absolutely cross-my-heart-hope-to-die can't see it), but there we go. This is definitely one of the best reviews I've seen for Dream Theater, nice going. Seriously, though, they're a different beast entirely live. Nice choice on recommended tracks too

I agree with most aspects of your review. I give it a 3.5 because it is great, with a lot of obvious classics. But its not excellent or even superb to me. Ive tried time n time again to like every single song on it but a good 6 is listneable. And I LOVEEEEE this band.

As for their songwriting capabilities, I think songwriting wise they got better with Awake. And yeah your right about DT showing off, but thats the whole fun of listening to them to begin with.

There's just something better about the albums with Kevin Moore on them. Even though the band still played and indulged excessively his input seems to be what kept the extended jams feeling like actual "songs".

This and Metropolis Part 2 are the only albums by these guys that i can stand (and then only sparingly). That aside Petrucci is a fucking god.

I've never listened to Dream Theater but I decided to comment on this review anyways. The reason is this review did an excellent job of giving me, someone who has never listened to this album/band, a good understanding of exactly what I would get if I picked this up. Despite the negative opinion of the band the review was objective in recognizing exactly why this band is so well liked(Good technical musicianship from several members) as well as giving good basis for disagreeing with the norm(Poor songwriting that focuses too much on individuals abilities to play their individual instruments well rather than cohesion of a band).

For those reasons this is an great review.

Nice review. I haven't heard much of their older work, but I like everything SFAM and after. From what I have heard, though, the older stuff doesn't seem to be as good.

yep. Phenomenal record. All of Dream Theater's 90's work besides "Falling" is fantastic.

I disagree with all the points you put forth here.

On the other hand, you justified them all, and warranted the 2 rating quite well. Definitely a good opposing review to all the DT love (of which I admit quite proudly am I very much a part of) for this album. And it was much better than most reviews around this site.

I really don't get people who say that dream theater has no songwriting or emotion because of all the technical stuff. Just because the songs are long and have instrumental sections does not mean that its bad song writing. its a different musical structure than normal music, something that in reality has no effect on the "quality" of the songwriting. as far as melodies and musical composition go DT is amazing, whether you like their style or not. Also, listen to james' singing in metropolis and try saying that DT has no emotion. its cool if you dont enjoy DT i just had to get my rant in. alright im done. On a positive note, its a pretty good review, i just happen disagree with the basic reasoning behind what your saying and ill rant about how awesome DT is at any chance.

oh yeah one more thing, i feel like this is the wrong album to talk about DT's lack of songwriting as this is widely accepted as one of one of their best in that regard

"It's weird hearing a saxophone solo in a progressive metal album. I want to listen to progressive metal, not a Kenny G album."

Wow, ignorant much?
