Meat I'm coming from a purely songwriting perspective with that statement. I'm not taking about riffs or solos etc. I unno, I feel that this is their most focused and mature songwriting-wise, and sounds like a band that has a clear vision of how they want to sound rather than seeing how many cool riffs they can manage to pack into a song a la Leviathan, or not knowing wtf they're doing like on Blood Mountain.
CtS is the closest in terms of songwriting imo

Band is good at mashing riffs together and that's what they shoulda stuck too, this is watered down schlock for the most part.

nah, there's some really wacky yet focused stuff on here (that octopus song idk the name havnt listened in forever)
BM though ugh that album was too messed up even for me

Album Rating: 3.0
Yeah BM was hugely unfocused and suffered from a lack of direction.

i mean dont get me wrong it wasnt just that if you ask me BM's production was too close to metalcore for my taste and the vox were puke

Vox were p bad yeah, Wolf is Loose is still an awesome jam though.

wolf is loose was one of the few songs that actually had good musicianship but now we're back to vocals..

agreed about this having the most focused songwriting followed by CtS.

the problem about the songwriting on here is that it's so boring, it's the same simple structures repeated throughout every song which makes the record such a monotonous listen after the first time, for me anyways

Plus no overall theme or 'storyline' to make it feel cohesive, seriously just an incoherent collection of average songs

Album Rating: 3.0
yeah but even their "concept" albums are incoherent

sad thing is i'm pretty sure this was mastodon's intention when making this

Yeah cuz every album has to have a concept or theme and can't just be a collection of short, sweet and
catchy music. Do you listen to pop?

the songs arent sweet tho, for hte most part
catchy maybe.. sometimes. but most of these songs seem very bland and watered down compared to the earlier material, even blood mountain which at least had some interesting genre bending material on it (though not always wonderfully executed)

Not at all, but Mastodon's strongly conceptual releases are definitely my favourites, and I would not call anything here sweet or catchy
