LarkinHill's on the ball here. Tread Lightly's an underrated one. That outro is bomber.

And what about Jaguar God and Steambreather!
Good call on Steambreather! And Jaguar God is pretty good but I’ve always felt it was overrated.

If we’re going to agree on one Mastodon record which is vastly under appreciated it’s OMRTS. EoS has that “return to form” narrative going for it.

OMRTS has some ridiculously good songs, that's a fact

OMRTS has like 3 or 4 all-time bangers, rock radio slept on that album HARD

OMRTS is definitely good and has some of their best songs (TREAD LIGHTLY, The Motherload, Chimes at Midnight, Diamond in the Witch House), but I’ve come to the conclusion it’s their worst album, even though it’s still a solid 3.5/4. If any of their albums are underrated, it’s Emperor of Sand. Fantastic album and half of you people have it. Roots Remain is legit a top 7 Mastodon song.

I think OMRTS is more tidy than The Hunter, and a bit more varied as well, so that tempts me to favour it, although I know they are equally good. And yes, EoS is an amazing album with serious songwriting.

I have more nostalgia for The Hunter, while OMRTS I agree has some catchy tunes on it. Emperor Of Sand is really solid too, probably the best one of their post-Crack the Skye albums.

Hearing this pleases me. Because whenever the album gets mentioned on Sputnik, it’s to trash it. Doesn’t compute.
Personally, I think The Hunter is obviously more varied than OMRTS. It has all kinds of different songs/tempos/melodies and just the overall sound in general (making it more cohesive, an element where it definitely tops The Hunter), but The Hunter is more varied (imo), surprising and interesting/entertaining. But tbh, they’ve swapped places in my Mastodon discog ranking many times. Fairly equal — both high 3.5s/low 4s (which is still an excellent score obviously).

Easily. It’s my 3rd or 4th fav Mastodon album.

The music videos for asleep in the deep and the motherload alone should vault omrts over the Hunter.

I thought The Motherload was amusing at the time but I'd rather go back to Oblivion or Divinations -- one of their story videos -- now that the joke is several years old
