@Sevengill Now, that's what we call commitment

@SymbolicInTime That's rude

In 2011, on the heels of Crack the Skye, this was disappointing. Then I grew up.

This is still disappointing. It's not bad, it's just...fleeting. Doesn't have the mythic quality of its predecessors, nor was it supposed to. Mastodon are having more fun, and they've earned the right to do whatever they want. But it's still disappointing.

"Mythic quality" eh? I guess I could see that, this was their first non-concept album after all.

The songs are so good, though.

the songs are great, and I think that there's the concept of healing and helping throughout the album, like it revolves around avoiding (or trying to avoid) death. I'm not saying they did it on purpose, just with Brent's brother dying and the title and whatnot. The only album I consider non conceptual is Once More...

yeah it was impacted by that, and the death of a family friend. lots of heavy themes here, as usual -- perhaps not as immediate as Brann's sister's suicide lending her name to Crack the Skye, though.

well, Skye's death had all the burden of a suicide behind it, which is wholly different from an accident.

I get mythic vibes on all their albums, even Emperor of Sand which i think is their worst.

@wildinferno2010 I just find this record incredibly boring. Thats really all there is to it. Stargasm is a dope track but nothing else on here comes close to it

This album's so much better than Emperor and Once More... It's certainly not their deepest or most cohesive record, but it's just a lot of fun to listen to.

@Symbolic i mean, fair enough. But if you liked Stargasm I don't see why you wouldn't like the rest of it. All the elements that make Stargasn good are there on pretty much every other track

@wojodta. Achievement unlocked! You landed on an opinion that could not stray further from my own. I’m just going to assume everything about your waking reality is the polar opposite of mine. Cheers dude!

@Inoculaeted so you think this album is way worse than Emperor and Once More... it's doubtfully their deepest and most cohesive record, but it's more than just a lot of fun to listen to?

Dunno about Emperor, Once More is about as good as this imo. Definitely not better, but possibly as good.

Mastodon and Opeth both should've renamed themselves in 2010. This is more like Manatee.
