bout how I feel

"I like to be surprised and thrilled, or transported. Swept away in storytelling, challenged by layers and nuance, or lulled into a state of serenity. The latest albums play their hand immediately and it ruins the musical journey for me because it's no longer meant to be a journey. It's intricate on a surface level, with creative musicianship and, well, catchy hooks, but there's no real intrigue beyond that. It's fun and quick, but that's all it is to me."
I'd like to bookmark this comment somehow & use it to explain my opinion on immediate, catchy, pop-like music whenever the subject arises. It's worded very well & sums up a lot of my feelings. My wife just doesn't get why you wouldn't want music to be immediately catchy/hooky.

I can totally idientify with that statement, and I usually tend to prefer more complex music, but The Hunter has a very rock n' roll attitude and straitforward character, so I loved it from the first listen. Curl of the Burl and I'm still shaking.

I really like Curl of the Burl honestly

This one has some really cool ideas, which are not signature Mastodon, like The Sparrow, The Creature Lives, Curl of the Burl (before the other more mainstream-ish songs), Bedazzled. I still like it, even if it is the least great Mastodon record

This honestly has the most highlights of any Mastodon album of this decade.

I've been thinking that this and EoS are equally good, but for different reasons, and realize how inferior is OMRTS.

omrts was a huge disappointment for me. the hunter was a disappointment but omrts was just bad imo

just bad, no, I completely disagree. It's really decent and has some nice moments. Hunter, on the other hand, was so pure and energetic. Mastodon left themselves loose and recorded whatever came out, unfiltered. I love this album.

omrts just seemed sterile and lifeless to me

This>EoS>OMRtS. None are below 3.5

you could be right, but given that The Hunter was my first touch with the band, I can't be objective. None is below 3.5, though [2]

this and omrts are an uninspired, pop-oriented mastodon on autopilot, I just don't get the love
