Does that mean this is extremely different than the band's other albums?
Not really, it just sounds like a blend of some of their past work, mainly their 90's stuff.

Does that mean this is extremely different than the band's other albums? Nope. It just sounds like their oldest stuff, with a bit of the new mixed in. Apparently a time when it was still more of a democracy within the band.

Heritage blows.

Gah, not their 90's stuff...

I was underwhelmed by it at first, but now I think it's one of their best releases. Took me a while to take the album for what it was and also realize how technical it actually is.

Nah dude, I'm still on here all the time, I just haven't been commenting as much.

The songwriting on this one is much more consistent throughout but the lack of anything that's really mindblowing is disappointing given that pretty much every record so far has at least one track that was downright awesome.

Good review btw Willie. I still might throw up a slightly more negative one in the next few days.

There’s probably not a single Dream Theater fan that doesn’t already know that Mike Portnoy is no longer in the band.
Wait what?
Hahahahha kidding kidding.

It shows that Mangini was the safest choice DT could ever make. Would've liked to seen them with Wildoer.
Umpteenth album I give a shot, still apathetic to DT. Good review Willie.

Instead of trying to sound like Metallica with a keyboard player
I must have missed a few albums then cause I can't remember DT ever playing thrash... Good review nonetheless.

As a fan, I loved this album to bits! I must say though that you need to give a few listens, it's not as immediate as their previous few albums, but hardcore fans should find more to like here than Black Clouds.
About the ballads, I really like them, especially "This Is The Life", a really great song with a nice restrained sound from Petrucci, but to each his own I guess.

This is the best release since Six Degrees thats for sure, it stays a little too safe though. But thankfully theres no 'Never Enough', 'Constant Motion' or 'A Rite Of Passage' to be found here, just the stuff that makes Dream Theater so good, epic songs reeking with talent and insane instrumentals.
I'm kind of glad Mangini isn't as loud or evident as Portnoy here, I wasn't the biggest fan of his mix, it draws the attention away from the other members.
But seriously, this is the first disc of Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence part 2, I can sure see the resemblance in songs like Bridges In The Sky and Outcry.

Looking forward to listening to this.
If what you're saying's right, though, Willie, I'll be glad to stand by my opinion that they should've went with Marco.
