Like 40 ounces, this is another landmark album that can be played and enjoyed from start to finish, packed with classics. Pretty much every song. To say there are only occasional hooks is absurd. They're everywhere. Every line almost. To say Nowell wasn't as gifted a lyricist as generally thought, is utter bull***. Dead or alive, and I'm not riding Bradley's d***, dude was f***ing brilliant. 40 ounces is a five star lo-fi classic. Sublime is a five star classic, period.

The run of tracks from What I Got to Santeria would make for a killer EP! Can give or take the rest of the album, it's pretty inconsistent.

As a show of sympathy, the album tended to be slightly overrated in some critical quarters, who claimed that Nowell was an exceptionally gifted lyricist and musical hybridist, but Sublime doesn't quite support those claims... Sublime sags when the band delves too deeply into their dub aspirations or when their lyrics slide into smirking humor. The low moments don't arrive that often -- by and large, the album is quite engaging -- but they happen frequently enough to make the record a demonstration of the band's blossoming ability, but not the fulfillment of their full potential. Of course, Nowell's death gives the record a certain pathos, but that doesn't make the album any stronger.

The quotes above are from allmusic and it is a trend I've been seeing the last several years of disparaging Sublime, and specifically claiming the record was initially critically acclaimed not on its own merits but as some kind of sympathy ploy for Bradley Nowell.

It's upsetting to see because to me this album remains fresh and a reggae/ska/dub/punk standout to this day. Bradley was undeniably a huge talent with his singing, guitar work and especially songwriting. He melded and jumped genres effortlessly, often within one song. His writing is very clever, witness his songs that didn't have choruses (Garden Grove is a personal favorite) but are still unbelievably catchy - a feat that is very difficult to pull off. Then on top of all of his talents, Bradley put soul into everything he did, his love for music oozes out of his voice and guitar. It's a shame he died so young and it's an equal shame that his work is now undermined this way.

Brads son sounds just like him, im pretty curious to see what comes of this. They’re talking about recording some lost Brad material too.
