It's kind of laughable to put their influences at Metallica and Exodus. Those bands certainly existed (and I know Dave Ed frequented the Omni, a metal venue in Oakland).
But around the time Neurosis was playing these songs live, they were sharing stages with Social Unrest and Christ on Parade. Hardore heavyweights of the East Bay. Later as they moved to their 'post hardcore' sound they were sharing stages with Grotus, Sharkbait and Crash Worship. I think that last band had the hugest influence on them. The tribal drumming and pagan aspects entered their work soon after their encounters with the infamous Crash Worship experience.
I was around for the transition of Neurosis from Hardcore to post hardcore as we now call it. The sound was really not that different between the Pain of Mind, Word as Law and Souls at Zero eras. It was still about loud, heavy and powerful as they got slower and more angular.
On the records the huge difference between these eras more due to the production. Pain of Mind was recorded pretty badly. Word as law was much better, but also sounded nothing like the live versions of those songs. Souls at Zero, while a great record, de-emphasized the guitars. Which works quite well in the context of the mix. The same songs live were overwhelming, crushing affairs. There was no escaping the guitars. My ears still ring.

So this is actually decent, not sure how much I like it yet but it's more interesting than I was expecting (not sure what I was expecting, really)

I also like how you can hear their future sound in some of the earlier releases, just a little taste of it. Here there's snippets of TWIL & even Souls.

I still haven't heard their last 2. This is probably going to end up being my least favourite so far, but I still got something from the experience.

Black is such a jam. Early Neurosis rules. Not as good as TWIL but still under-appreciated.

so I'm here because evilford made me realize I'm an idiot for never really listening to Neurosis. this album is not what I expected at all from their debut hahaha. can dig though!

also I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to discog runs, so chronological order is the only reasonable path..

Their evolution from here through to Souls is utterly gargantuan, and from there they continue to explore new ground/reinvent themselves. I wouldn’t have advised starting here, but if you’re dedicated and actually fully intend to see it out, then these guys have one of the most interesting developmental paths of any band, ever.
