I like images and words (a lot), but its never appealed to me as much as this. However, images didn't have any overkill solos, which is more than can be said for this

This is probably one of their weaker albums - DT don't do heavy well in my opinion. The last three songs are my favorite.
Images and Words
Awake
Metropolis Part II
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
---
Black Clouds & Silver Linings
A Dramatic Turn of Events
----
Octavarium
Train of Thought
Falling Into Infinity

Also, check out "The Fullness of Time" by Redemption. They have a few members of Fates Warning and are essentially DT-lite. I don't think any of their other albums are anything too noteworthy but TFOT is wicked.

I think they do heavy well, but SFAM owns this.
Above list is pretty accurate

I haven't heard The Fullness of Time but Snowfall on Judgement Day is really good, better than most of DT's new stuff.
My DT rankings have changed a bit recently:
SFAM>Images=Awake>SDOIT>BC&SL>Octavarium>ToT>SC>FII=WDADU

Snowfall has some good moments but it's way too long. Solid 3/5. The Origins of Ruin I could probably lower to a 2.5, it just sounds really bland to me. I don't like the production and the chugging m3t4lness they tried adding in some of the songs.

Snowfall took a while for me to really love. Started at a 3.5 and now it's a strong 4. It is way too long but every song is just epic so I don't mind the length anymore. Plus Ray Alder's vocals just rule.

Honor Thy Father is so awkward to listen to at times but the OOOOOON AAAAAAND OOOOON part rules.

This just gets way too over-the-top even by DT standards.

I can't even begin to comprehend why you think that Ties.
This is true heavy prog.

It's still a borderline 4 to be fair, but recently I've started liking Six Degrees more than this.

Six Degrees is way better.
What do you mean by "over-the-top"? This is one of their simplest in terms of song-writing by far, along with Octavarium and Falling Into Infinity. They're basically 4-5 minute Hard-rock/Metal songs with 8-minute instrumental sections.

I just meant it feels kinda overblown now, the songs drag for me more than they used to.

I don't find a second of this album cheesy. I used to think that As I Am, Honor Thy Father and This Dying Soul were immature, but it grew in. The ending trio of Vacant/Stream of Consiousness/In The Name of God is 100% perfect

Album's good but sounds a little too forced at times. The Glass Prison > Anything from this album.

The 'true' progressive fans will probably have hated this album because of its excessive heaviness and groove, but the band's consistent performance with each particular instrument is second to none. On 'As I am' Petrucci displays an infectious riff before spiralling into god-knows-how-many solos, all in 7 minutes. However, that is the best highlight i can give, as it all goes slightly downhill from there. Only slightly, mind. I would say that the keyboard melodies and riffs often repeat themselves for minutes on end throughout the album and 'Vacant' would be better off being the end of 'Honor thy father', but this in my eyes is still the best dream theater of the 21st century.
