Ah, did you think I meant that music should be created *academically*?

Lol, academically formulated black metal would probably sound terrible and forced.

Oh, right, Liturgy sucks.

(But, yeah, I meant that I'd like to see black metal subjected to more intellectual discourse and writing, but manifestos like HHH's just turn people off of it.)

i thought black metal was best when it was about emotional expression. liturgy do a good job of proving me right. :]

Saw these guys open for Boris. Went outside after the second song and talked to the people there until they were done.

Gaping holes of shit where the emotion is supposed to be. :]

Hey, MisterSteel, we must have been at the same show. I sat down on the floor on the sides with my ear plugs in and went on my phone for the whole set, haha.

Irving Plaza in NYC? Thankfully Asobi and Boris more than made up for it. Which begs the question of why I even saw Liturgy open at this show. Kind of the odd ones out.

Yep, that's the one.

And, yeah, Asobi Seksu and Boris together made perfect sense to me. Liturgy are (undeservedly) hyped in the art/music scene around here, which is probably how they scored that gig.

so parts of this are really pointless but having read nothing about this band or their douche frontman other than this review/thread, this is ok. more bm should have drum work like this.

The interview with him is awful. This guy shouldn't be allowed to play black metal. This whole band is really a disgrace to the genre.

yeah i think if there was less (deserved! totally! i'm with you guys!) stigma around the ivy league graduate singer and his really weird and silly manifesto on transcendental black metal and That Fucking Interview, then people could just see this as a fairly inventive, weird math-rocky record with some EXCELLENT playing (especially in the realm of the band, like, playing -with each other-...they really seem tapped into each other's styles and yeah something something)

idk

i think this is far too normal and safe sounding for a black metal album

also it's boring

While I'll say that I think this is awfully boring (and not at all engaging live), obviously, this band wouldn't get the hate if it weren't for that manifesto and interview.

Like I said, I'd even appreciate someone who would be willing to academically engage black metal. Just, you know... do it well.

But, hey, can't undo those now. And these guys still have a decently sized fanbase in NYC, so it's not like they're universally shunned. :P

I really do dig a few tracks, but this album kind of sucks as a whole.

the idea? perhaps you're right. and you're right, the playing is really great. but the execution of this album is just so messy and self-indulgent and at times just infuriatingly bad as if the band are trying to be annoying. :[

if they just did the parts with the blasting and the tremolo riffing and screamo vox and some of the cool groove-oriented parts and the dude would just never speak in public this would be much better. i'll admit my first impression of this (after the pointless intro) was pretty positive, i can most certainly dig fast riffs and blasting. but then over the course of the album they really play in too many directions and never develop any kind of enjoyable atmosphere, and in the end that's why we listen to bm in the first place. i would call this a failure.
