Nothing can ever beat Transatlanticism for me based on sentimental value, but with that exception, yeah, this is their best imo.

I like The Photo Album (higher peaks) and obviously Trans better than this but that doesn't diminish the fact that this is amazing.

Gonna begin my discog run on these guys tomorrow, starting with this. Only heard a handful of songs from them. But what I’ve heard has me excited. Also including The Stability EP and The Postal Service in my run (everything by chronological order of release).

This was pleasant enough on first listen, but kindof one dimensional and bland. All the songs sounded pretty similar to each other. But sometimes, those are the types of albums that are huge growers as multiple listens begin to reveal the subtleties/nuances of the songs and their unique identities come to light.
Hoping that’s the case here.

I need to listen to this one myself. Transatlanticism is an all-time best but I remember feeling the same way at first. The front was pretty underwhelming but it all started revealing itself with time.

That's a fair first listen response Lark, this one took a long time to grow on me (like 3 years) even though the band was already one of my all time favorites when I first checked it out. It is consistent almost to a fault - I'd rate thist their third best but even some of their relatively "weaker" albums like Plans and Narrow Stairs have songs I like better than everything here. Much as I love their whole discog through the end of the noughts I can't deny that Transatlanticism does stand head and shoulders above everything else, but take your time with this and The Photo Album too and they should reval their beauty.

Good to hear. This definitely seems like a grower. I really like the last four songs and the opener, but the rest is kindof whatever. But it’s still a knee jerk reaction and I’ll continue listening, hence why I haven’t rated it yet.

Rules, and also has some of my favorite album art ever.

Tracks 3-5 are probably my least favorites here so I can see where you're coming from Lark, but yeah def let this grow on you, it's got a lot of subtlety.

I like this, but it’s just not truly clicking with me. It’s a nice listen, but frankly, a bit boring at times. I’ll revisit later but, as of now, I’m gonna go ahead and move forward on their discog — I believe The Photo Album is next? Hoping that, Stability, Transatlanticism, Plans, and/or Narrow Stairs click (I don’t really have expectations for their newer stuff, but I’m definitely doing a full discog run regardless).

Given your tastes, I will be shocked if you don’t give Transatlanticism at least a 4 (and I’d bet money on it being higher). The others you mentioned could kind of go any way but they’re all 4+ for me, but many took years to grow to that point.
This is also a bit of an outlier in their discog, their only album I’d classify as (Midwest) emo and it’s also their most slowcore-influenced (excluding the Stability EP which is straight-up slowcore).
