Yikes, nowhere near for me - half the songs are incredible but the other half come dangerously close to falling flat.

Can see the appeal though.

‘Drover’ and ‘Riding’ are both top 20 Callahan tunes f’sure

Overall prefer ‘Dream River’ which has some similarities

Something about the tome of this one just really works for me. It feels conceptually pretty complete too, more so than a lot of his other albums. I do owe Shepherd some more listens though, I’ve not fully returned to that since really getting into him.

I find this less unified than ‘Knock Knock’, ‘Doctor’, ‘Dream River’, ‘Eagle’ or ‘Shepherd’…but I’m totally on board for anyone having their own personal pick of fave Callahan.

Consensus would be impossible to achieve with this mighty discog.

Will spin the last two on this again, never made much of an impression on me before

“Free” is a bit of an interlude track but it’s excellent for what it’s doing. “One Fine Morning” is huge though, that’s a big part of what really brings this together for me (that one coming on in a playlist this morning inclined me to bump this thread). I think this one has a great, sort of cosmic vision of dark and weird Americana, that last track has an epic feel of sitting on the porch watching the landscape as doom approaches - a personal doom perhaps, but still somehow one deeply connected to the land and its atmosphere. Maybe I’m grasping at straws though.

Yeah, listening now and both seem more in service of the ‘album experience’ ahead of being that compositionally standout as standalone tracks - dunno, for me it’s too sleepy a conclusion still I think to regard this as his best.

I do like the divisive tune ‘America’ a fair amount

“America” almost breaks the immersion but I think it’s essential to that weird vision it mentioned. Funny enough I actually heard some songs from this in the docuseries Wild, Wild Country as my first Callahan exposure and I think that somewhat informed my perception of this one. Might be that you have to be a Yank to fully get this one. 😉

This is his most 'American' conceptually yup, I don't think that's what's stopping me bonding with it, but maybe it doesn't add as much for me as if I was on the home team ;D
