I disagree with you entirely, but at least you make your case.

Couple mistakes in the review I noticed:

Problem is, there’s such a strong desire to make nearly every track skin-tinglingly epic or cathartic that what the band up losing as a result is their delightful charm, their sense of fun, their rock n’ roll attitude, and, almost, their individuality.

I think you forgot to add the word "end" there.

‘April Fool’ doesn't take no prisoners

*doesn't take any

Awesome review, although I don't know why you assumed that lyric from Pale Black Eye is about his wife. Seems very presumptuous especially considering how ambiguous Andy hull can be with his lyrics at times.

Love this album. The tone of it reminds me of the devil and god are raging inside of me. May have topped Thursday for my aoty. Seriously. It's that good.

I can even overlook the children chorus parts of virgin (that song is amazing, don't know why they included that).

agree w/ this review. the album feels over-produced, over-calculated etc pretty much over-everything. everything is trying to be epic and makes me lose interest eventually. mean everything to nothing kept rockin and had well placed epics and mellow points. the band seems distant and lacking heart here, like they've lost all the humour and playfulness that made me love metn. y so serious manchester orchestra? plus the songwriting doesn't compare to their last two imo. also the title track stands so much higher than every other song here it's ridiculous.

so yeah p much agree

i'd hate to use a muse analogy but if metn is origin of symmetry this is absolution.

As a huge Manchester Orchestra fan, I find this album hard to review. It, for the most part, does not sound like a Manchester Orchestra effort. The flawed, but compelling nature of the lyrics is missing and to take the place of them is a set of perfect, and deep ones. However, the music feels almost too professional. Almost as if there was no room for error on this. The lyrics have more meaning, they're a product of more masterful craftsmanship, but the music seems like something devised out of routine, rather than reality. Their albums used to be playful and fun, but still heart breaking, when they needed to be. On this go, they pull on all the heart strings and try to evoke contemplation too often. It just feels far too perfect. A perfect punk record that is just missing something in the soul department.
