this pretty much killed the stupid fashion-punk shit that was being relentlessly shoved out there at the time (simple plan, good charlotte, avril lavigne, ashlee simpson, et al).

I can completely see how people don't love this album, but it combines just being a fun listen and actually being good pretty well.

oh sat, didn't see you'd posted that fashion punk comment in here. yeah this album definitely did not do that. its practically the embodiment of fashion punk. remember how much merchandising there was with american idiot?

Yeah, and brought us such gems as Underclass Hero. Ouch.
Other than that, I believe this is a really, really great album, with virtually no weak tracks. It only got so much hate because it was overplayed as crap. True, some lyrics are cringeworthy and its success turned GD to a very, very bad direction (AI musical? AI MOVIE? 21CB is also trying too much to be American Idiot 2, and, like most forced sequels, fails for the most part). But simply as an album it stands well. And it made me listen to rock music, and that's a thing you don't forget.

pretty much every band sells merch, so that's hardly even noteworthy. all i'm saying is that when you scrape past the dumb aesthetics like grown men wearing eyeliner there's a good album here, which is more than can be said for bands like good charlotte and simple plan, who were scarcely even heard from after AI.

i think you might be presupposing a bit much here
i don't think ai's astronomical success could have really hurt simple plan and good charlotte... they probably just wore out their welcome like most bad trendy pop music

jammed to this yesterday in full actually. its odd listening to it after the emotional attachment has faded. Homecoming really is the best thing here

correlation certainly doesn't equal causation, but it seems like the focus shifted to more of an arena rock sound among the mainstream, and the aforementioned bands were either left behind or tried (and failed) to imitate.

Did the exact same thing yesterday Electric City; I was amazed to find I still knew all of the words and chords after all these years XD
