"How is this album groundbreaking?"
There was absolutely nothing like it and a generation was taken by storm, is not uncommon to hear about them as a big influence when getting into heavier stuff, band blew up after debut and is now a recongnizable name for a reason regardless of their downfall that came many years later

Album is definitely a unique experience. I was always surprised this had so much mainstream appeal. It just feels so grimey and abrasive, like a snuff album made in a serial killer's basement.
|
| |
hmm in terms of mainstream appeal i think this album/era of the band very much taps into a sort of middle-american alienation that artists like eminem were getting big off of at the time, but like... metal br0, while at the same time sounding very hip and inclusive given the trends of the time. korn without the melodrama... gwar but not for nerds... limp bizkit without the celebrity.

"How is this album groundbreaking?"
The s/t and Iowa were groundbreaking in the way they brought extreme metal to the mainstream. Of course you had bands like Morbid Angel and Death bubbling up from the underground due to MTV exposure and such, but Slipknot were basically one of the first bands to merge extreme metal instrumentation/vox with radio choruses and accessible arrangements in such equal measure. Wait and Bleed is a perfect example of this; super heavy riffs and throat-shredding vocals in the verses, capped off with an incredibly catchy arena-ready chorus the whole crowd can sing along to

The drum sound is so so so so good, it's so natural and uncompressed. Ross and Joey killed it.

i like self titled because it has that fun energy that the rest of nu-metal has while being way darker than most of their contemporaries
