i don't want to be mean to chris fehn but like
how impactful was he to the band overall?

In terms of the music, next to none. Half the time dude was just running around on stage. Not to say clown was any better. Overall he did seem to be important, I was reading an interview where they talked about making this album and they mentioned how he bought the trailer they used to carry their equipment when they traveled down to Cali to record everything

makes sense, when you have a band with as many people as slipknot has you're going to have members who do more outside the actual music than the music itself I feel

He was definitely important in terms of their early image and mythos. The air of mystery these guys carried in the beginning was almost unheard of in metal (or music in general, really) and having 9 members who you didn’t know shit about certainly helped solidify that for them. Obviously 8 would have been just as effective, but people really liked his mask, the stuff he would do it live, so while he wasn’t indispensable, he wasn’t necessarily “essential” either if that makes sense.

yeah it's hard to imagine slipknot without them all honestly. shit there's value in being a good hype man during the shows

Absolutely, and Chris was one of the best tbh. Even that stupid stuff like jacking off
his nose was oddly iconic and huge part of their early show/live energy in general.

This album was everything to me around the time it dropped. Little kid Shawn thought this was the most aggressive thing to ever be created and I loved it. This album almost single handedly led me to my death metal obsession also along with Mushroomhead- XX and Sepultura- Roots

Same, big time

I still think this and Iowa in particular are up there for me. There's tons of "more extreme" music out there but I honestly can't think of anything as pissed off sounding as Iowa. Corey's vocals were insane, yet his angry ass lyrics were always completely intelligible through the noise. Identifying with these albums as an angry teenager myself back in the day plays a role in that I'm sure.

Honestly it's still pretty high up there on the aggressive scale for me too. Pretty pissed off stuff and it still holds up imo. I get hit with an insane wave of nostalgia anytime I play a track from this. Don't care for Iowa as much but it's solid too. Need to jam this in full again. It's been years since I've listened to more than just a track here and there.
Thought it was pretty awesome when I was a kid my parents would make me get the edited walmart versions of explicit music. Slipknot somehow managed to get this album into Walmart with the parental advisory label taken off but none of the curse words were edited from the album itself. I was so stoked when I popped it in my walkman and realized I was still gonna hear all of the fucks lol

I still remember going through the CD booklets for this and Iowa just filled with all kinds of gross shit as a kid, thinking about how cool I was for being into such a brut4l band

Surfacing is the one song from this era that I can definitively say I've aged out of. I just can't listen to it with any seriousness anymore.

Stop to think "maybe its not meant to"
Cool track, I love the main hook when everybody used to sing along lol, but mainly the guitar intro totally makes fairness to the track name.
