Review Summary: Nothing to see here folks...just more bad music to be played on the radio.

"Watch what you wish for...you know that you just might get it"

This lyric off of the song "Completely" entirely sums up my sentiment towards Art of Dying's debut album "Vices and Virtues". A couple of years ago, I discovered these guys while surfing for some new modern rock and was pretty impressed by their self-titled record. The potential was there - melodic vocals, not-so-bad riffs, and a solid knack for song-writing that put Art of Dying on my list of Artists to Watch.

Fast forward to 2009 and the announcement that Art of Dying had been signed by Intoxication Records - the label run by David Draiman, better known as the most horrid human being to front a band that goes by the name of Disturbed. This news did not settle well with me at all - I knew that this record deal would nail the coffin shut for this band before they even put out a major label record. Eventually the band entered the studio and began recording "Vices and Virtues", and it's safe to say that the results are rather poor.

The album opens with the lead single "Die Trying" which is quite arguably one of the worst radio rock songs I have ever listened to - run of the mill cookie cutter rock designed for nothing but maximum radio play. Forget it, this entire album was created with the intention to maximize radio play and is clearly marketed for 14 year old girls, and 40 year old gym rats. The most unfortunate thing about this album is how the revamped tracks from their self-titled record were watered down so terribly and buried under overproduction and glitz. To give you an idea of the garbage that is on this record;"Raining" was remastered, rewritten and rerecorded with a feature from Three Days Grace frontman Adam Gontier - that's about all I need to say for you to understand how masterfully horrid this album is.

You can hear David Draiman's influence all over this album - especially on the track "Whole World's Gone Crazy" where the song sounds more like a Disturbed B-side than anything Art of Dying have ever written. The album has a ton of filler, not a great surprise considering there are obviously 3 or 4 tracks here intended to sell the album. The market won't care though, nobody who would buy this album because of the radio tracks would even care to have a substantial album with any content anyway.

"Vices and Virtues" is a huge disappointment; I really did enjoy the songs Art of Dying released before this train wreck. This just serves to show as a great example how "Nevermind" was more of a catalyst for killing rock than transforming the landscape in a positive way. Everyone is chasing that formula that worked 20 years ago, and here's another band failing to come close to anything they are capable of. Stay far away from this - unless you're one of the two target consumers I mentioned earlier.

It's not that bad of a review but I think you should have cooled off a bit before writing it. Just comes across as bitter and very one sided.

I remember awhile back, maybe a week or so ago, some new user reviewed this and gave it a 4.5 lol. Then the review got taken down cuz he was basing it off of a leak.

I'm assuming it sucks and isn't a 4.5 like that guy said.

I've heard a couple of tracks from this one. The majority of them sucked.

Saw them live with All That Remains, they were good live, but the music is rather bland. I was shocked to hear a well done and well sustained scream for the opening track, but I assume it isn't on the album.

I guess I'm part of the target audience. I think it's an enjoyable listen from start to finish, even the 2 bonus tracks on the deluxe edition. I always enjoying coming to sputnikmusic.com so that I can look for shitty reviews. if an album gets a 2.5 or less, I know it's going to rock and I should buy it. I love how totally pussified "rock" bands like Death Cab For Cutie get good reviews on this website. It's lame and unlistenable. If you're looking for poetry, buy a poetry book. If your looking for some good riffs and aggressive vocals, buy a real rock album like this. Anybody who doesn't at least think this is a solid album has no appreciation for hard rock and should go listen to their John Mayer collection instead.

Holy fucking lol

Because the masses like sucky music, that's why it's bad.
If a hard rock band or post-grunge band decided to put out a decent, non-generic, and lyrically adept album, then it probably would get a good rating on this site.

''Tell me why being "radio ready" is bad. Tell me why appealing to the masses is bad. Regular everyday people who buy music don't pop in a cd and say "DAMN, that chord progression was predictable and those riffs are radio ready...this is garbage".''

Well, the people on Sputnik aren't regular, everyday, music consumers... I'm pretty certain we all take our music really seriously, and the last thing we want is something that is extremely predictable.

Bro, I think you're losing it lol.

Have you even seen the vast variety of music Sputnik listens to? I mean, seriously? Lol, do you even know what you're talking about? As far as I'm concerned, you're hating on indie music because you think it's,"lame" or whatever. Yes, it is very laid-back, but it's not ''goofy shit." lol.

You want some stuff to rock out to? Go listen to Defeater, then grow up.

"So for every cliche Disturbed, Nickelback, Hinder, Buckcherry, Seether, Breaking Benjamin Adelita's Way, joke that you make...just keep in mind that those bands are keeping ROCK N FUCKING ROLL alive, in the vain of Motley Crue, KISS, Guns N Roses, etc."

Holy bloody rofl. Man, made my day. If they're keeping Rock and Roll alive, we're all screwed.

Good.
Because seriously, the indie section of Sputnik is pretty small... I mean, honestly, so many people on here like metal/post-hardcore/screamo/emo/ you name it. It's not like we're just a hipster community lol.
But, indie music is still good, even if it's relaxed.

Honestly this site is probably more geared towards metal and hardcore than anything else.

You want some gym music?

Ordinary, everyday people don't listen to shitty hard rock.

I pretty much registered to say that I agree with everything bhough7 said.

If any sputnik reviews are rated 2 or below, it's a must-buy. Considering albums like Fallen by Evanescence or bands like Seether get 2 out of 5, you can guess what kind of community this is. Most of the so-called 'shitty' music appeal to the masses for a reason.

Sputnik sucks ass and is full of homos without taste (like the fatass who wrote this review while jerking off in his mom's basement). Just saying.

"Most of the so-called 'shitty' music appeal to the masses for a reason. "

The masses are ignorant, lack intellectuality, and adhere to the most simplistic form of music. Hence why the things you kids are defending attain such vast popularity. Music IS ART. It's quite clearly defined as such, so to say the artistic means of music is pointless, and that it should be heavy, is absurd and illogical.

The "LOGIC" people like validuser & bhough7 (whom I'm convinced are the same damn guy) implicates that anything popular is immediately GOOD. Every pop song which is created for the sole purpose of a quick cash-in is GOOD, while artistic songs flourish in obscurity. Yeah, thats logical.

The argument being presented here is laughable at best.

This is an inaccurate review. First of all Dan Donegan is the producer not Draiman, so you are completely wrong there. The Disturbed frontman had next to none influence on what this band does. I could understand you not liking this album because it is similar to other post grunge bands like Three Days Grace, but hating it because a Disturbed member founded the record company and the songs are catchy just makes you a moronic douchebag, who doesn't know a thing about music. It doesn't make sense that you can like their first album but not this. They are so similar except this one has better sound quality and kick ass song Whole Worlds Crazy. Horrible review, but hatred gonna' hate.
