Rating this the same as AVL's The Long Procession is a crime

I was reading an interview with them last week & a few things they said convinced me to give this a listen when it was released. Trey, your review just backs that assertion up.

And I'm definitely not grumbling about arena rock. LOL.
I could definitely see you appreciating this, Davey ;)

For everyone else, yes this is a four but there are a few things to remember. First, if you don't like this kind of music than the rating drops. If you don't like her vocals or symphonic elements then the rating drops. That's why I rated this a four and explained exactly why it is a four. But you could read the same description and just think WTF? Basically, ignore the rating and read the review.

Comparing the two bands is a crime. I'd rate Blink-182 and New Found Glory as 4s too, but if I want something like AVL they wouldn't feel like fours because it's not the style that I was currently looking for (like this one time with these droids...)

The theatrical overkill has been toned down you say? Might give this a listen then.

Willie is correct this album is great. The stupidly overwrought flourishes that infect European Opera Metal appear to have been slapped into submission for this record.

Good review. I think Enter is their best album though.

There is no way that this can be as good as you say. It just can't. But fuck it, since my curiosity is so easily picked, I'll youtube/myspace a few songs and see if I like any of them.

Not me. It's slow and two-dimensional and one of the 'lesser' albums in the genre. There are better albums by Theatre of Tragedy, Distort, Draconian, etc. It wasn't until Mother Earth that the band stepped into their own.

Make sure you read my first comment on this page. It's excellent for people that like this kind of music. I mean, other staff review their hipitty hop and indie stuff '4' and above all the time and I think a lot of it is garbage (personally) just because I don't like the style to begin with. Basically, '4' and above doesn't necessarily equal universal appeal.

Perfect place to start.

I heard Faster yesterday from radio for the first time, and I thought it sounds familiar. Yeah, it sounds like Wicked Game by HIM. But anyway, gotta listen this album.

I guess it helps that I have no real feelings towards this band at this point. All the stuff I've heard from them I haven't particularly cared for, but haven't hated either. So basically, if it's good then I'll like it (I mean, yeah, their style isn't the most appealing to me, but it's pretty unharmful and if it's done well, it can be enjoyable in small doses I think)

Mother Earth isn't bad but it's so damn cheesy and some of those lyrics -- terrible.

Definitely agree with this, it has two of their best known songs (being the title track and Ice Queen), but as an album I can hardly see why some consider it great, or even their best. Prefer both The Silent Force, which is more consistent, and Enter, which is different (in the good way) from their later albums.

Whenever I hear this band I'm glad that I'm Belgian and not Dutch.

Oi! Watch your tongue there, neighbour.

I was really surprised when I saw the review but so far it's actually pretty fresh compared to what they've been doing for too long, silly concept and awkward cover art aside. Not up to the mark you've given it, but still, you make a valid point. I enjoy my Within Temptation just every once in a while.

Mother Earth was the first album I've heard of this genre back in 2000, thus the reason why I hold it so dearly. Up to this day I still consider those songs some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard.
