just to add my 2 cents to the lack of RZA here, because ive read quite a bit about this:

I think his problem is that RZA isn't interested in producing those sounds anymore

its pretty much this. It's not that rza wants to make vintage wu beats and rae wont let him because of some beef. It's that his beef is RZA won't make those

beats anymore.

But ive heard interviews from both sides where they say theyd have no trouble working with each other at some point again. RZA said he has no problem with Rae doing his own thing, he doesn't always have to work with rza.

But Rae and ghost didnt like what rza did on 8 diagrams, weren't happy with the fact that it didnt sound like a wu-tang album even before it was released, and rae initially wanted this album (shaolin vs wu tang) to be a group album with everyone BUT rza (which did seem kind of fucked up, but i think tensions maybe were still high at that point). I remember an interview with rae where he said that when he was working with rza he was asking for him to make a beat that sounded one way and rza would come back with something completely different where he just basically did his own thing. I love RZA, a lot more than rae actually, but if that's true then I'm glad rae did what he needed to do to get a sound that captured the wu style well.

@ Bulldog

so that's a gimmick?

at least it's not a "I'm gonna rape my mom and kill Kim gimmick" that was much weaker imo

Gimmick or not, TMMLP and TSSLP are both fantastic. TMMLP is my favorite hip-hop album without a doubt.

great review, really concise but thorough.

I expect to enjoy this album, I liked OB4CL2, but not as much as most of you all.

I'm hesitant to get this, hip hop has just been so sub par this year. I don't know if I can take another disappointment.

Except for Tyler the Creator, that shit will be swag for sure.
