idk Phlebas, I ain't buyin' this argument. Well written, sure, though you talk about how drab and cliche the lyrics are and maybe you could use some more examples?

random thought: do you really think a review is "well-written" if you have issues with its argument
or opinion? As writers should our goal be to use words that seem to fit together smoothly or to
clearly and eloquently present our thoughts?
I think a lot of writers spend more time on their diction than the actual thoughts they want to
share. Writers should work more at clearly processing what it is they are trying to share as
opposed to choosing nice words. As someone said once "language is the dress of thought." I think a
lot of reviews on the site are people's attempts to write reviews with good language; it'd be cooler
if they were more inspired by developed ideas they want to express. I'm not really critiquing this
review... I remember agreeing with it but liking some of the songs anyway enough to have a higher
rating.

also in that bieber vid the spazz out ending is too good

yeah... something can't be well-written I don't think without having backed up opinions well...
any 8th grader can write a decent essay with sufficient grammar and diction, that isn't necessarily what makes a review well-written though
that's my gripe I express sometimes : p

I just read the headline and sometimes the last paragraph if I like the reviewer.

In an essay I'd make a point about something in the primary text, back it up with a quote from a secondary source, then move on. In a review I make a point, give an example of what I'm talking about in the album, like which song, then move on. How else do you back up your opinion? This review is a point of view, intended to make people question the album in a particular way. And it's insulting to be compared to an '8th grader', Sea. I choose to write brief reviews because I prefer them, not because I'm unable to do otherwise.
As far as the lyrics go... well, the way I see it, you can either think of lyrics in general as some cool decoration within a song, or you can pull it apart for all its poetic worth (or anywhere between the two). Either way, this album is devoid of anything remotely engaging. The lyrics offer no immediate satisfaction, no obvious spark of wit or flair with language, and they yield nothing upon closer inspection. I say they're drab, because they are so resoundingly miserable. It's like Eeyore read half a chapter on modernism then knocked off an album.

I think that's is one of the reasons I have no sense of great connection with this album because for the most part it is void of those characteristics, great review Phelbas.

You can absolutely think something is well written/filmed/presented without agreeing with its points. This happens all the time, I mean, I know a lot of people who aren't overjoyed watching Citizen Kane but anyone who argues that film isn't well made is retarded. I think the only problem I have with the writing in this is the lack of fleshing out of ideas (ie. adding examples of supposed poor lyricism), but that's not enough for me to say this isn't well written.

I wasn't talking about whether you agreed with the opinion or not; I meant whether you thought he fleshed his ideas out well or not. But I get that it's not a major quip.
