Holy shit

Truly one of the all-time greatest bands

Their worst album is a solid 4 - I don't think I can say that about any other musical artist

The only thing holding this band back from being my favorite band of all time is the small size of their discography - they place second or third for me behind Radiohead and maybe Lambchop, both of which have over twice as many albums

I hear you re. small discogs struggling to be absolute favourites, but often they're the most comfortable to return to

Cannot believe I took so long to check this

Why is there not more talking about this band going on?

most of us fell in love with this band a long time ago and have already said all that we wanted to say about them. plus the band has been over for ages, so there isnt really anything new to say. yea they're the one of the all time greats but no one wants to relentlessly ramble on about that for like 20 straight years

i disagree. a lotta small discogs tend to be waaaaaay more consistently high quality than the larger ones, so it's easier to say "i love this band's entire discog" in regards to this band in contrast to artists that might have much larger discogs with more great albums but also more underwhelming/mediocre/crap ones. i guess that reflects my tendency to view a band's discog as a single body of work as opposed to a chronology of separate works.

I agree with that point dimsim. The only large discography that I can say I love everything they've done is Jimmy Eat World. Smaller discogs tend to be more consistent, even if they leave that feeling of wanting more.

especially if they leave that feeling.

all that said, there are larger discogs out there that are as consistently great as small ones. dylan's right about radiohead being one of them

I agree with that point in general, but when it comes to the absolute top of the top, those rare bands with exemplary and extensive discogs who end up cornering the market on both quality and quantity tend to make such a huge mark that it's tough competing with them. Radiohead for Dylan is a good example; I guess I'd pick out bands like Sonic Youth, The Gathering, and maybe Thrice or the Flaming Lips. There are some bands like Anathema and Blonde Redhead who I'd say derive a huge net benefit from showing consistency between many albums rather than in concentrated portions of their discogs

There are definitely more small discogs that I love as a whole than long ones - no question about that, the kinds of discogs in question are hardly the norm
