johnny i definitely have a level of appreciation for the past, it's just that I'd like to think my views on music are more in the realm of, I guess forward thinking.
Good shit occurred in the past, and that's important to acknowledge, but as time goes on, so does new ways of approaching music, new styles, new things to incorporate. i know almost nobody here really is of the mindset that music is "dead" now, so this isnt a shot at anyone here. but I'd rather embrace what is coming next than be a hermit only appreciating the past.
the 60s and probably even earlier had some good music, ive been meaning to dig deeper so i can have a greater appreciation for what was. but i generally wouldn't put really old stuff ABOVE what has came out in the last 10-20 years because i still acknowledge that the limitations of the time kind of date the music, at least in contemporary context. Im sure there's old classical pieces that stand the test of time, but even with that, you can probably hear a modern orchestra performing it in a recording and it would come across more clear, showing that.
the writing itself (as nebulous as that is when im saying it) can hold up over time, and that's why sometimes, covers that capture the heart of the original perfectly can surpass them in terms of overall enjoyment. I wouldn't say it beats the original in this case but Avenged Sevenfold did a pretty true to the original version of Floyd's "Wish You Were Here", and im conflicted on which version I like more.
ps: wish you were here is probably my favorite Floyd album and might honestly be the one really old record that could help me appreciate the shit better.

its funny seeing defenses for this from the same people who think competently-played stuff deserves a 1

An opinion such as yours venin in which music is some sort of ongoing creative progression and therefore better than what once was is essentially what has killed music.

"An opinion such as yours venin in which music is some sort of ongoing creative progression and therefore better than what once was is essentially what has killed music." nah i'd argue pointless nostalgia trips like the ones the likes of Greta Van Fleet go on are more responsible for any sort of "death" of music, if even there was such a thing
and @ryus: no, it's not. this sounds like a drunken bar band that can't stay in time.
