But their older stuff is just taking off of populist folk and adding some old-timey folk instruments, I still fail to see how that equates to ripping off NMH

The Decemberists are truly hurt by your honest opinion Adam, therefore it must change.

i totally see your point here, but if you try not to think about what this COULD have been it's still a very enjoyable, inoffensive little album for me

The trouble is, because of their back catalog, it could have/should have been amazing, so it's inoffensive/blandness is made worse. Not a 2 though.

I disagree, but it's nice to see both sides represented. Castaways and Cut-outs is the shit though, and I never got the NMH stuff although I just assumed I was looking at it wrong.

This is a really nice album if you don't put too much weight on it. It's not as epic as HoL or CW, but it carves its own niche. This is definitely a summer album, and probably on the forefront of my summer playlist (along with as always American Football).

The review tbh seems kind of weak. Just because it's not what you expected from the new Decemberists album doesn't make it lifeless. Your main point seems to be that it's bland and lifeless, but I don't think that that's true; I think you're just disappointed because you expected a prog album and got a thoroughly folk album instead.

Curse.

Somehow I'd like this better if it wasn't a Decemberists record.
