Ya I think the ambient tracks are absolutely necessary, because when the album goes hard, it goes fucking HARD. It’s good to give those tracks some breathing room

It adds to the atmosphere of the record
It's certainly heavy, but there lingers strong emotion, and the ambiance is able to showcase a facet of that feeling. They also function incredibly well as crescendos for those moments where the band goes full-throttle, and even then "Ascending" has a self-contained climax of its own.
