coldness slips in like a draft under your door. it does not bite. the bits that do bite are acrid, not cold. sure af has an atmosphere and a couple of Good Guitar Moments, but hard not to take it as a poor hipster's leaves turn or spiderland

i actually completely disagree with u there johnny it totally makes sense to me that this is seen as a modern classic to so many. i prefer the other album but i need to spin this again bc i’ve always liked it. cindy lee is my favorite post-Women project

this as a modern classic makes a lot of sense to me; cuts a really clear line through what practically every other guitar band of the time was going for, and the closest thing to it is deerhunter-ish faff that epitomises all its least attractive aspects and few of the best
as an all-timer though, not really at all

I can't even see how this is comparable to Leaves or Spiderland (which in themselves are very different) aside from the very broad trait of "weird" guitar. I mean sure, if you like one of these, you'd likely enjoy them all, but the style is very much its own thing to my ear. This has a bit more of a post-punk/minimal quality to it.

All three share a v distinctive/hollow autumnal depressive quality and focus on brittle tones and lingering tension that goes far beyond their respective vocabularies (which yes lol are obviously superficially different)
They are also united by being *tbe* landmark guitar record for this kind of dissociative atmosphere for their respective decades
And regardless of commonalities, this is by far the weakest of the three

I'm sorry but how do u listen to a Beach Boys album in full and not come to the conclusion that they, in fact, are sad sometimes
