I probably could have given it a 3, although there's also something to be said for hyperbole in that statement. I don't mind the album, it just isn't my favorite because I know that For Today is so much better than that.
Thanks btw.

No stick up my ass Defeater, but posting a music review about an album of music with the summary as a quote about how "this isn't about music" is just madness. But hey what do I know. Superb review.
(I didn't neg btw.)

yeah the summary made me vomit a little. altogether a good review, though.

*Album review.
Lyrics is an important part of music, at least to me. I don't know, this all makes sense in my mind.

Well, this is however supposed to be a music review and I really don't see the point in giving the album a 3, since, in short, you say there is absolutely nothing interesting about the music. You could give a good rating to an album with interesting music and dull lyrics but the opposite... really doesn't make any sense.

It depends on your preferences. I'd rather listen to something that is generic but has lyrics relevant to my life than something technically advanced with stupid lyrics.
I think that for For Today's intentions, this album turned out great; however, they didn't do themselves justice on their instruments.
If I were rating purely based on the lyrics it would be a 4.5, maybe even a 5 (I'd let the cowboy line slde)
So yeah, I think I balanced it out.

good review Ms. Kimmsight Matters : - )

I love it when good music is combined with good lyrics. It makes the emotion more intense. On the other hand, I can easily listen to music in a language i don't understand, or even without any lyrics.
What you describe above, and especially with the introductory statement, just looks like preaching dressed with music, so that it might get more attractive. It has to be mainly about music. Otherwise you could just read a book or something.
Anyway, I have never listened to the band, the review just struck me as awkward, that' s why I insisted a bit. I rarely comment anyway.

That's fair. Like I said, the album will only appeal to a very select group of people, and I wouldn't recommend it to most because it is more about the message.
That being said, Portraits and Breaker are much better than Ekklesia.

In my 'breakdown hunting' days about 18 months ago (before i realised how retarded and repetitive it was) i really liked a few songs off this album
Im not a devout christian by any means, but I still found the message behind 'never lose sight of the goals' to be pretty uplifting, still do have a soft spot for that and agape.
Enjoyed reading your review though, nice one

Thanks StrawBuilder =]
Yeah, there's a lot of positivity to be found in bands like For Today. That's what I like about the music...while it's still considered "abrasive"sounding music by a lot of people, the message can be so uplifting.

The problem is that your description of the quality of the album's supposed lyrical content is merely descriptive or hyperbolic and seems to revolve strongly around the very simple fact that it's just Christian.

There are a lot of bands with Christian lyrics that don't nearly measure up to the lyrics from this album.
It's not "just Christian", it's written in a way that all the tracks fall into place in a perfectly cohesive way.
Also in my first paragraph I pointed out that if you don't understand/agree with the concept, you might as well not read the album. There's a reason I said that.

Oh my gosh, is no one getting this?
I am not trying to sell this album on anyone because I KNOW it's not everyone's thing.
This review is objective; I'm explaining the band's intentions with this album and how they measured up to their own expectations. This isn't a "OHMYGOSH FOR TODAY IS THE BEST BAND EVER GO LISTEN TO THEM NOW!!!!!" type of review.

Eeeee well that's because it's what the album is about. I didn't state my own opinion once, although I guess most of you know my stance anyways.
But whatever, my next one I will try to talk more about the music...might be hard though because I'm doing Portraits which again is very lyrically focussed.

But dude if I was Christian there is nothing here to convince me that I should pick this up ahead of the newest mewithoutYou, which again is very lyric-centric but the reviews for that are engaging in analysis and discussion of the lyrics as well as talking more about the music than this review.
But hey, like I say, this is merely my opinion and it's up to you whether it matters. I just don't go around criticising shit for the fun of it, or because I disagree with a review.

I know, I understand what both of you guys are saying, and Pit - I appreciate you actually giving me some real advice instead of being a total ass. ;)
I just didn't have a whole lot of good things to say about the music because I heard Portraits and Breaker before hearing Ekklesia so I had high expectations which were not met. But the album is well put together and as a whole, I think the album is good. Not fantastic, not great, but it's above average to me. Everyone views music differently, and to me, lyrics are just as important as anything else.

I don't think this is supposed to be an outreach album btw. It's more traditional preaching; intended mainly for Christian listeners.

I actually really like the straightforward message. Metaphors and whatnot are great for other bands, but I think Mattie works the straight-shooter approach quite well.
Portraits especially. That's one of my three "Classic" albums.
