those deranged screams in Phosphene and Wings of Predation, just unmatched darkness. Like this is one of the few TRULY dark black metal bands. these guys are no joke, well versed in literature and occult, etc. aspas vocals here are just crazy, say what you want about him but his work here is fucking impeccable.

Yeah, fuck Mikko as a person, but his vocals are such a key part of the sound. Lots of people act like he's dime a dozen, but he's truly got so much range and character/drama to his performance that's hard to replicate. Genuinely one of my favorite extreme vocalists. Still bummed the new record turned out so mid, I never thought these guys would drop something disappointing since they'd been turning out white hot heat for 15 years.

Agreed. Fuck Aspa, but his vox couldn't be more perfect for this band's twisted sound.

honestly I don’t completely agree with him being irreplaceable. His almost spoken word style of growling def takes a lot of talent, and the times where he really goes off are seriously impressive.

But you mean to tell me that you really can’t find one single other guy that can do that but without the nazi stuff? Especially when you’re one of the most celebrated black metal bands of all time?

i think his finnish accent really gives a certain charm to his delivery thats why if you replace him it sounds like a different band, sure hes a versatile vocalist and skilled, but that accent is very distinct, he also has a fairly deep speaking voice

i would disagree about the latest album tho i understand, it was a new start for the band kind of beginning a new cycle, a new trilogy, almost like its si monumentum again, in that sense it can only get more sophisticated on upcoming records where they will perfect this new direction like they always do

Well I agree on the new album at least.

It’s not nearly as good as this but that vocalist on the first track (maybe he pops up again?) is awesome. I hope they use him going forward. He sounds like a fuckin war lord about to lead his army into battle

@Bitter, glad you enjoyed it! There are lot of great directions to go from here. Fas is great if you want them at their most otherworldly and challenging. It brings even more dissonance. The Kenose EP is them utterly perfecting their very dynamic sound and holds its own against any of the LPs while being a bit more digestible in length. The Synarchy of Molten Bones IS them at their most angry and in your face brutal. Si Monvmentvm is them first venturing into more avant garde territory, but still has solid footing in a traditional second wave bm sound. Doesn't seem to get quite as much love as the stuff right after but I think it's a five. If you want them at what could be considered their most organic and melodic, Furnances is incredible. When I first dove into them by listening to the thematic trilogy of Si Monvmenvm, Fas, and Paracletus in order, it changed how I looked at guitar and music in general forever.

Thanks for the insight, very much appreciated indeed. I will be diving through the full discography over the coming months amongst many others. I'll be sure to let you know my thoughts on each once conclusions are reached.
