i was between a 3 and a 3.5 rating
those clean vocals turned the balance towards a three.
and the music is not so inspired.
But that's just my opinion.
After 20-30 ratings, the "true" value of the record will reveal itself.

Not so inspired? I'm not quite sure what you're getting at with that? Not inspired because you don't like it? Not inspired in what way? I'm not sure if that sentence actually makes sense. After 20-30 ratings, the "true" value of the record will reveal itself. I'll have to respectfully disagree again. The amount of ratings won't really reveal the true value at all, the same way if you asked the average metalhead to vote on Nothingface by Voivod... it would all depend on voter turn-out.

The amount of ratings won't really reveal the true value at all
Yet they do Trey. If not for every record, it is certainly the case for the majority of records' ratings on this site.
That's why i dug Sputnik in the first place.
However i must admit that there are some cases for new albums in which the anticipation is so strong, that when they are released they get (somewhat) unreasonably high (or low) ratings and when the rush has been watered down, the merit of the record remains "high" (or "low") with respect to the "real" merit.
the same way if you asked the average metalhead to vote on Nothingface by Voivod...
About the rating of Nothingface, it depends my friend.
i believe that if you put the "average" "80's old school" metalheadz to rate Nothingface you would get a different (quite possibly lower) rating average with respect to the rating average coming from the "average" "21st century" metalheadz.
The "nonlinear" combination of the two "groups" for every record (or nearly every record) - something that is the case (more or less) here in Sputnik - reveals the "real" merit of the record, whether we like it or not.
The same goes for Atheist or Cynic discog etc. etc.
About the new Solefald album, this is just my opinion.
i'm not claiming that i am "dead right", this record is a 3/5 for me, that means it's a good record but that's that.
The clean vocals didn't appeal to me at all.
I saw in your recs La Masquerade Infernale from Arcturus. If LMI is a 4.5/5, the new Solefald is a 3, 3.5 tops.

I had a huge rambling response, but it was way too much... basically the only thing that proves an album's merit is individual taste. The overall opinion is an ok way to make a quick assessment but it's tainted by sputnik hype, mindless sheep, and troll votes. So, when you're busting out your math skills to describe an overall rating and only including two groups for every record you're forgetting at least three more that aren't influenced by the actual album at all.

This is so close to a 5 for me, but there are a few minor things that keep it from getting there.

I mean it's pretty awesome all around. I know some people have to be in the mood for "weird" stuff like this, but I love it all the time. Bands like this, Arcturus, and Transcending Bizarre? are awesome. Have you heard the new Transcending Bizarre yet Willie?
