I love the Bobby story that comes with that song . they played the song in Cumberland, and one of the old miners said to Bobby " wonder what the guy who wrote that song feels about you singing it" LOL

never heard that lol that's hilarious. it does sound like it could be an old americana/standard lyrically. good ol Robert Hunter
"best studio dead"
yeah it's close but i wouldn't disagree. probably this or American Beauty for first/second followed by Blues for Allah in third

cheers. i'd have to go Aoxomoxoa fourth, not the greatest studio recording but has some of my favorite songs (China, Mountains, St Stephen, Cosmic Charlie)

Beauty, Workingmans, and Terrapin for me
I know Terrapin isn't a popular pick, but the title track, Passenger, Prophet all went really hard for me

Aoxomoxoa is great because it still had some of their 60s energy and fire (China Cat is also one my favorite GD tracks) on a studio release, while Anthem of the Sun is a bit too unpolished. i could do without "What's Become of the Baby" though. Terrapin and Mars are definitely close behind. Terrapin as a song itself is a hard 5/5

yeah man Aoxomoxoa is underrated as a studio release imo, nobody ever seems to mention it even though it has so many classic songs on the tracklist

my prof was talking about Grateful Dead during class today and I asked him which albums I should check out by them and he said this and Europe '72 are their best. is he right?

too many new live releases for me to have E (72) on the list
Live Dead and Skulls and roses still make the list though

Europe 72 is kind of like a live greatest hits comp even though it isn't. That was one of the first records of theirs that I was listening to on a regular basis. I would then go to each of the studio albums for these songs and expand from there. I'm talking 1990 or so Wham bro.
