Honestly can see her doing something ambitious next time and it being a 5. If this was Fearless part 2 I wouldn't say that, but it's not. It's clear she's got no plans of being forgotten soon.

listened to this again and it is realllllllly catchy (as usual for her); might bump it up to a 3....MIGHT. that being said there's really not that much progression from fearless. she is a dime though.

and i can commend her for writing her own lyrics for once, but they're still nearly identical to her past lyrics.

how is there not much progression? argh.
haunted... last kiss... story of us... better than revenge... dear john - if any of these songs were on her last album they'd have stood out like a sore thumb - the fact that they don't here is testament to how different an album this is.
IMO.

ok i can see SORT OF where you're coming from. i honestly did give this a couple listens through and am trying to be as objective as possible when critiquing it...she's a master of vocal hooks and her voice is angelic, but the backing instrumentation is lackluster for the most part and lyrically she's STILL dribbling on and on about teenage lust and angst...which gets old. every song. same subject matter. rinse, repeat (though once again i will admit, she is a master wordsmith regarding this shit).
i guess i can see where a 4 comes from...4.5? no.

the angst and list has become much more real-world with this release.
the 4.5 comes from her practically infallible ability to write engaging lyrics which simply doesn't falter on this record from where i'm standing.
the music here is varied and engaging enough to warrant the rating too.
i will stand by this rating!! :P

its really just more of the same plodding, banal adult contemporary shit we've all heard a thousand times before with a couple of decent hooks here and there
lyrically it's also pretty sickening
Dear John,
I see it all, now it was wrong
Don’t you think 19 is too young to be played by your dark twisted games when I loved you so?
I should’ve known
does this really engage you

hahaha ok. i'm just trying to wrap my head around it is all, not questioning your judgment. but i cant help but wonder if she can write lyrics on any other subject matter than this. eventually she's going to have to, especially if you think she's still got a 5 worthy album ahead of her.
and the instrumentation is pretty bland, and thats one aspect of the music that i will not budge on. haha.

Granted 'sort of bland' is a term I will adhere to, but it's occasionally engaging, and she changes it up on this album enough to be at the least entertaining. And I don't understand how anyone can deny how good 'Last Kiss' is. If that was released by an artist other than Swift it would be a fucking hit here and people know it.
And she's written her lyrics so far on growing up, love, loss, loneliness, Kanye West, and her critics. The last two of those come from this album. Bear in mind she is 20 or whatever - I'm not using that as an excuse for her lyrics, but the reason she is only writing about teenage experiences is that her experiences are only teenage - it's important to recognise the optimism that comes from that because if she was 19 and writing about politics I don't think it would ring true at all. And she's expanding, so I can see her branching out much more next time. It's an exponential process.
